Personal History

Lucy grew up in a loving family. She was always looking at the stars or looking for rock varieties around where she lived. Her parents didn’t hold back her scientific curiosity. She wasn’t entirely the token girl at the Astronomy Club or any of the other science clubs at high school, but it was close. She went through what she felt was an Ugly Duckling phase. She was treated as a pariah until her final year, but by then her only true friends were in the science clubs.

The boys in the group went from wondering why this girl was so interested in science to wondering why she was still their friend. They were the ones that had given her the nickname Cassandra after the red-haired seer of legend. Lucy felt this was appropriate. She was one of the taller girls in her year almost from when her growth spurt started. She liked boys as friends, but nothing more than that. Her time in college was a greater education than she had expected.

Lucy arrived at college still a geek, but with looks that couldn’t be ignored easily. Jocks got shot down in flames if they tried to ask her out or make a move on her. High school had left certain mental scars. The science guys weren’t too slow in doing the math, but they were polite enough to accept Lucy for who she was. You didn’t reject a girl who could slay almost any scientific challenge just because she wouldn’t date you. It took Lucy a little longer to figure things out.

Some prankster set off a sample of genuine Orion female pheromones in the girls’ halls and while the majority of those affected were treated for headaches. Lucy and a few others spent the night in the multi-purpose gymnasium working through a strange reaction. The gym was a place of solace for Lucy even before that night. She used it to work through a lot of her self-esteem issues. It also helped keep her in shape.

A few days after that night the captain of the cheer squad asked her out and she didn’t tell her no. Their romance upset the status quo throughout their time at college. Jaclyn knew they were going in separate directions and that Lucy was headed for the stars. They graduated as friends. Lucy really did want to see the stars and learn as much as she could. Star Fleet Academy would get her there. There was so much to discover and meet.

Life at the Academy had been amazing in ways Lucy hadn’t realised. Cadets from the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. Where she had been part of a group of just over two dozen she was now among hundreds, some far more intelligent in certain ways. The training cruises were a lot to take in, being able to travel to parts of the solar system and observe them. Almost in the blink of an eye graduation came and went.

Her first assignment on the Apollo had been a good start. Getting real hands-on experience of the breadth of what a Science Officer could do. Most of it was sitting interpreting sensor reports and sometimes that could be a lot to take in. It almost looked like it was going to be a life of studying nebulae and forgotten systems when the Apollo was asked to assist in a large scale archaeological survey.

Dvorak had been partially explored years before by a different group from Star Fleet. Thanks to that mission they were prepared for the ion storms which occasionally plagued the planet. Lucy had been starting to fall for an Orion Science officer called Zherru from one of the other ships in the group. The chemistry between them was undeniable. This meeting of the minds was cut short when an ancient security system decided Zherru was an intruder. The system was deactivated and Zherru’s body recovered. Lucy coped by throwing herself into her duties and faded away from socialising. She didn’t know if she could take another heartbreak.

The Apollo was destined for refurbishment, so the crew got placement on other vessels. The Artemis had just returned from their time in the Delta Quadrant and they had room for a Science Officer. It felt daunting to be assigned to the vessel that discovered the Megasphere. She hoped she could meet the expectations of the crew.

Role Model: Annika Hansen, also known as Seven of Nine. Incredibly intelligent, a little full of herself and Lucy's first crush, if she had realised it at the time. She’d studied about Voyager and Seven’s story fascinated her. Seven had grown up in the Borg collective, then matured through her friendships with the Voyager crew. Lucy endeavored to learn from Seven’s mistakes. The results varied..
