Federation starbase Deep Space 9

Deep Space 9 was a Federation star base known off-and-on-again as Terok Nor. It was a historically, politically, and strategically important space station, located in the Alpha Quadrant. It was constructed by Bajoran slave labor, overseen by Cardassians, during the Cardassian occupation of Bajor. After the occupation, DS-9 was relocated into the Bajoran system, in the Denorios Belt. It then became a trans-commercial port and Federation defensive outpost due to its proximity to the Bajoran wormhole. Later, it was a key strategic location for both sides during the Dominion War.

Under Federation membership, the base's shopkeepers were encouraged to stay and help build a trade network through Bajoran space. The USS Enterprise-D was the first Starfleet ship to dock at the station in 2369, when it transported the majority of the station's Starfleet crew to take up their posts. The USS Voyager docked at Deep Space 9 in 2371 on its way to the Badlands to search for the Maquis ship Val Jean.

Bajoran Wormhole

Shortly after the Federation took control of the station, a wormhole was discovered. It was determined that it was the only known stable wormhole in the Milky Way Galaxy, which crossed over seventy thousand light years from Bajor in the Alpha Quadrant to a point near the Idran system in the Gamma Quadrant. The discovery of this stable wormhole had a great impact on commerce throughout the region, making the system one of the most important locations in the entire Alpha Quadrant
