1943 – Heart surgeon William C. DeVries is born. He would go on to implant the first human artificial heart, the "Jarvik-7," in 1982.
1958 – The first human-known radio broadcast from outer space was transmitted. USA President Eisenhower's voice issued a Christmas greeting from a pre-recorded tape on board an orbiting satellite.
2013 – Spacecraft "Gaia" is launched by the European Space Agency.
