  • Probe "Mariner 9" becomes the first spacecraft to enter Mars orbit successfully.


  • A Soviet "Mars 3" lander reaches the surface of Mars.
    It transmits for a few seconds, but then goes silent.
    It has the distinction of being the first spacecraft to reach the planet.
