• The two surviving members of the Vulcan exploration team which crash-landed at Carbon Creek, Pennsylvania are rescued.

• The "National Aeronautics and Space Administration" (NASA) is created, in order to replace the "National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics" (NACA).

• Earth's magnetosphere is discovered.
  A magnetosphere is a region of space surrounding an astronomical object, in which charged particles are affected by that object's magnetic field.
  Planets that have an active magnetospheres are capable of mitigating or blocking the effects of solar radiation or cosmic radiation. This protects all living organisms from potentially detrimental and dangerous consequences.

• Two biologists report that the first mammals, a litter of mice, have been grown from embryos, which were developed in vitro and transferred to a surrogate mother.
