Personal History

Family History

Suien Porter was the third child in a marriage between an Edo and a human, though her Edo mother died before Suien reached schooling age. As such, the mixed blood child was raised in a largely human culture, and by the time she reached age 15, had very little of the free-spirited Edo nature left in her. Her father owned a small establishment on Starbase 12, and had lived and worked there all his life, and Suien shared this fate for most of her young life. When the time came for her to either follow in the family business or take her own course, the girl found herself unwilling to surrender to a life that existed purely in the confines of a single Starbase. Having passed basic schooling with excellent grades, she was accepted at a tertiary institution to study Anthropology and Archaeology.

Suien was 25 years old and a practicing archaeologist by the time she eventually met Maral. A typical Edo, the man was a free spirit, warm and gentle. The girl was instantly infatuated, especially as Maral reminded her so much of her deceased mother. The time between encounter and marriage was barely a few months, and Suien's father fought against the marriage quite stiffly, believing it had come too quickly and involved little real love. Despite his objections, the joining went on, and for a while, things were good.

The pair lived on Rubicun III, in one of the smaller settlements, Shakrapau city. Both their children were born there, and for quite a few years the family existed happily. Their home was one where the Edo philosophy was taught to the children in moderation, and existed peacefully. Unfortunately, though, it soon became evident that Maral could not live within the shackles of monogamous marriage, nor could Suien accept a husband who considered being unfaithful to her a way of life. As such, the marriage ended after a little less than a decade.

After this, Suien found herself in disfavour in the academic world, having left abruptly to go raise children on Rubicun III. She also realized that dig sites were no place to raise an 8 year old son and 9 year old daughter. Reluctantly, she went to her father for help. He welcomed her back, gave her a job as assistant manager and set her and her two children up with a little place to live. Suien has lived there since, though with her father's retirement has taken over the establishment. Despite being unfulfilled in her job, she is happy with the upbringing she has provided for her children.

Birth and Early History

Taeroc was born to an Edo father, Maral, and a half-Edo half-human mother, Suien. Admittedly, he spent his early years blissfully unaware of the major differences between Edo and human culture, and had always thought the way his home operated was perfectly natural. He lived quite happily in the family home with his two parents and year older sister, and enjoyed the free spirited activities that Edo children engaged in. He was also raised from a very early age with the principle of never breaking the law, as any such activity was punishable by death in Edo culture.

He first started noticing the peculiarity of his own home when his mother started making him come home earlier to work on his schooling. Where most of the other Edo children were allowed to pursue whatever activities they wish, Taeroc had to return home to study. Eventually, he also began to notice that the loving home he once had was becoming hollow, the relationship between his mother and father slowly beginning to fall apart. Even though he had noticed it happening, he was still shocked the day his parents sat him down and told him they were separating, and that the children would be moving with their mother to a Starbase several days' travel away.

Confused and afraid, the children had little to comfort them but each other. Despite their parents' best efforts, and even Suien's father doing what he can, the children’s' early experiences of Starbase 12 were not happy. Despite this, though, they made it through, found new interests and made new friends. By the time Taeroc entered his teenage years, he was fitting in well.

Teenage Years

Despite still struggling to get rid of some of the habits he had learned during his childhood years on Rubicun III, Taeroc failed to become the mal-adjusted young problem case that most had expected him to. The station counsellor had warned Suien that the boy's upbringing had been a textbook example of what produced anxious teenagers, but Suien had refused to accept it as an inevitability. Regular visits to his father, a supportive home and a parent pushing them to achieve had helped stabilize the two children.

Schooling on the station was conducted in organized classrooms, and it was during his early teenage years that Taeroc began to soar. Though his mother and teachers pushed him to perform academically, in leadership, sports and cultural activities, Taeroc soon found that he was far happier settling for just being great in academics and sports than being good in everything.

He and another boy, Alex Turner, were the stars of the class, and a rivalry quickly began to form. The two ended up pushing each other to achieve more, and all parental parties involved soon grew concerned that the situation would turn from friendly competition to something bitter. Alex's father, the station doctor at the time, suggested having the two enter a partnered academic triathlon, which pitted student teams from all the nearby stations and Federation planets against each other. Despite their differences, Taeroc and Alex soon found that they worked well together. They quite nearly dominated the competition, losing in the final round. Despite their failure, the pair did not turn on each other, and instead returned as powerful friends with extreme mutual respect.

Although the pair strengthened each other, they were also quite capable of leading each other into temptation. It was at Alex's motivation that Taeroc had his first brush with breaking the law. It had taken a lot of coercing, especially as Taeroc had grown up in a society where any breaking of the law would result in death, but eventually Taeroc had his first brush with incivility. In turn, Taeroc often found himself leading Alex astray when it came to girls, and some might argue that it was Taeroc that had turned Alex into the womaniser he became.

Soon, Taeroc turned 16, and the time came for him to choose a life after Starbase 12. Initially, both he and Alex would have gone to an engineering University on earth together. On recommendation from the Starbase commander, though, they applied to Starfleet Academy as well. Ultimately, though, Alex became far more interested in consulting engineering, and dropped his application.

At the age of 17, they travelled to Earth together, where they would go their separate ways.

Starfleet Academy

Starfleet Academy presented a period of unprecedented growth in Taeroc's life. Apart from the initial months following his move to Starbase 12, he had never been thrown out of is comfort zone quite so completely. He also no longer had a nearby friend or family member to lean on. He was as alone as he could be, and for someone who'd always preferred maintaining a few very close and intimate friendships rather than growing his circle of friends, Starfleet Academy initially proved to be a somewhat lonely place.

His first semester was spent on settling in, attending classes diligently and putting all his effort into his academic and sporting interests. Eventually, though, some of his reservation began to fade, and he started growing a set of new strong relations. He found these to be poor substitutes for Alex, though, and found himself often waiting for the few times a year that they were both on vacation simultaneously.

Taeroc tended to fall in the top half of the class more often than not, but still nearly failed a few tumultuous subjects. While performing exceptionally well in subjects that concerned practical applications and problem solving, he struggled with those that required hard studying effort. More often than not, he proved he could understand, but had a somewhat poor memory.

Except for the few who had dared to reach out to him, most of his peers were apathetic concerning him, and Taeroc was quite happy to maintain the status quo. His instructors, on the other hand, varied between respecting his talents and annoyance at his vices.

Taeroc also had his fair share of flirtations while at the academy. Few of these were serious enough to last more than semester, though one did hold on long enough to be invited on a skiing trip along with a few other friends. Whether it was Edo blood or culture, the cadet proved unable to transition a relationship from infatuation to love.

The young engineer's goal had always been to move into research and development, yet as time wore on at the academy, he quickly grew to realize his plan would likely have to be put on hold. His instructors warned him that few people are recruited directly from academy, as they usually lacked the knowledge of the environments that Starfleet vessels operated in to be of any real use. As such, most cadets looking for a career in R&D had to spend a few years on the frontier, learning what it was that was asked of Starfleet vessels and their crews.

Though he knew his apply to R&D first and foremost, the cadet made sure he would at least be useful on a starship. He minored in Emergency Engineering, a course that took the already honed critical situation responses of Starfleet personnel and refined them. He clicked well with the curriculum, quickly showing that he could think on his feet and keep his head in a crisis.

During his years at the academy, Taeroc dabbled in many activities, though these never replaced the sports he had grown accustomed to while living on Starbase 12. He came close to winning several big tournaments, though he failed to produce on any of the occasions.

Despite having a few scares on the way, Taeroc graduated successfully within the standard timeframe. His application to R&D was not accepted, causing him quite some disappointment, but he resolved to perform whatever assignment given to him as best he could despite this. All that was left was to find out what this would be.

Starfleet Career

II. Get promoted to Ensign.
III. Take some time off to go visit family.
Long-Term Goals: I. Get reassigned to Starfleet HQ Research & Development.
II. Retire to a life of research and acquisition of knowledge.
Personality: Many would argue, had they all the evidence, that Taeroc is a somewhat morally bankrupt individual. This would never happen, though, as nobody has all the evidence(Taeroc being far too careful for that), and even if they did they would realize Taeroc only ever breaks the law to push himself. A highly driven individual, Taeroc pushes himself to be faster, sharper and smarter than his colleagues, often neglecting his physical needs and what common sense would dictate being safe to do so.
First and foremost, Taeroc is a problem solver. Though not possessing of an exemplary technical knowledge, nor an overly powerful brain, the boy still manages to see solutions that a lot of people miss. This has given him a reputation of being somewhat unorthodox, as well as being a risky bet. Although he solves problems easily enough, he will often neglect certain details or fail to take into account the environment the solution will work in. This sometimes leads to additional unexpected troubles. Even so, most of the cadets graduating with him would choose to work with him purely for the fact that he always has an idea, even if they would have to make sure he wasn't doing something dangerous themselves. In addition, his performance also tends to ramp up as pressure builds.
Unfortunately, though, the man is also somewhat difficult to work with. With a highly inflated ego and brimming with self-confidence, Taeroc can be somewhat disdainful of others. Until the point where he is actually proven wrong about someone, he will firmly believe he is superior, irrelevant of rank or station. Despite this, he still works well in a hierarchy, and can easily be considered a valuable resource to an officer who knows how to use him.
On a personal level, Taeroc is easier to get along with. Usually calm and collected, he speaks softly and gently, and has some of the warmness that his people are famous for, albeit in a far more reserve manner. For the most part, he seems aloof initially, but quickly grows comfortable with new faces. After this, he quickly becomes welcoming and joking. Ultimately, most will discover that this is merely a new level of aloofness, with the young engineer still being sure to keep his distance despite being quite cordial.
Sense of Humor: Taeroc will easily show his appreciation for a joke with a gentle laugh. He has an easygoing nature when it comes to humor, offering light-hearted quips himself, though he'll usually only do so when with a small group of individuals. In times of pressure, he often turns sarcastic and negative, and, though funny, can be detrimental to morale. He is also quick to become self-deprecating in a joking manner, though he becomes prickly when others make jokes at his expense.
Phobias: Heights - Taeroc tried spacediving once (and only once), and has since been fearful of standing on any surface he can see through. He tolerates rock-wall climbing quite well despite this, though.
Bacteria - An obsessive cleaner, Taeroc loses his cool quickly when confronted with rot and decay.
Likes: Trying new sports.
Holodeck tennis tournaments.
Solving problems.
Sincere approval from senior officers.
Cooking dishes from various Federation cultures authentically.
Being under pressure.
Dislikes: Being dirty or anywhere near anything that is dirty.
Direct physical contact with unsterilized surfaces.
People expecting him to be promiscuous due to his heritage.
Pet Peeves or Gripes: Anyone who leaves dirty dishes or rubbish lying around, especially in his quarters. Having a meal not self-prepared or replicated personally.
Bad Habits or Vices: Will almost always struggle on alone rather than asking for assistance.
Whenever working under pressure, Taeroc neglects all other things, including eating properly, washing, dressing in a clean uniform and shaving.
He has been known to procrastinate when not checked up on regularly.
Achievements: Academic - Distinctions in System Design, System Theory and Advanced Programming Algorithms. Louis Phillipe award for creative and innovative problem solving during an Academy project. Graduated in top 20% of class.
Leadership - None
Cultural - None
Sports - Quarter-finalist in sector Single Tennis Championships. Twice Academy single tennis finalist. Top 10 placement in Academy Rock-Wall climbing challenge.
Disappointments: Never winning a major Sol Sector tennis championship.
Not being accepted to Starfleet Research & Development straight from graduation.
Being unable to find a way to stay in the same sector as any of his friends.
Illnesses: Usually in excellent health, with no allergies to speak of. Partial insomnia.
Strengths: Excellent creative problem solving ability.
Highly dependable.
Versatile and adaptable.
High work rate.
Weaknesses: Poor team player and difficult to work alongside.
Often overestimates his own abilities.
Can see the bigger picture, and the smaller picture, but struggles to do so at the same time, leading to forgetfulness.
Will most often play things by ear rather than plan ahead.
Rarely has a plan at all.
Fears: Getting stuck(posted) on a Starbase or station far away from home or anyone he knows.
Never getting to Starfleet Research and Development.
Being unable to make new friends at his new assignment.
Prejudices: Believes that Vulcans are soulless taskmasters and far too uptight.
Has the general Alpha Quadrant dislike of Ferengi.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Shorts, a vibrant polo shirt and sandals when on a planet. A comfortable track suit when on a ship or station.
Distinguishing Features: Taeroc is relatively unremarkable. He carries no childhood scars, as most were easily removed by the advanced medical technology of the day, has skin unblemished by any kind of marking and wears no jewellery. He does, however, have a small patch of lighter hair jus behind his left ear as result of a birth marking.
Friends: Alex Turner - Recently graduated engineer in the private sector. Taeroc and Alex have an incredible respect for each others' character and ability. Taeroc often speaks of Alex as the only person who ever really challenges his way of thinking.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Fracturing his wrist during the Sol Sector single tennis championship quarterfinals, forcing him to forfeit the match and lose his final chance at winning a major title while at Starfleet Academy. Publically, he had refused simply having the fracture seen to at the match and continuing because he did not believe he would be able to perform as well as he had. Secretly, though, he had ingested a banned substance just prior to the start of his first playoff matches in the tournament, which he knew might cause a side effect. The knowledge that his desire had been self-destructive haunts him to this day, especially when he realizes he hasn't changed that much since the tournament.
Best Time: While on vacation from Starfleet Academy, he and Alex Turner went on a cross-country skiing and hiking vacation with their respective girlfriends of the time. Taeroc firmly believed he could live the whole rest of his life with only those three people in it and thoroughly enjoy it.
Most Crucial Experience: While growing up on Starbase 12, Taeroc once stumbled into a holodeck program that had mistakenly been left running, simulating a rock-wall climbing scenario. He quite suddenly found himself hanging from a ledge he perceived to be near a hundred feet off the ground, and was painstakingly unaware of holodeck safety protocols. With nobody to help him, the young Taeroc learned to swim when thrown in at the deep end.
Role Model: Rear Admiral Thomas William Kenneth Taggart - During his initial tour of Starfleet Academy, while he was still uncertain about applying, Taeroc came across a portrait of Admiral Taggart in the auditorium. The man had a stern, yet wise look about him, and sharp eyes that seemed to take in the essence of whoever stood under their gaze. He asked the recruiting officer of the man's history, and found the admiral's story quite intriguing. Much of what he was told of Taggart reminded him of qualities he had always aspired to, but had struggled to instil in himself. He was not impressed so much by what Taggart had done for the Federation and Starfleet, but by how he had done it. Taggart was renowned for getting the job done, often by means that few could anticipate or even fathom.
