1914Physicist James Alfred Van Allen is born. He discovered Earth's magnetosphere, as well as two toroidal zones of radiation due to trapped charged particles encircling the Earth (also known as the Van Allen radiation belts).
1923 – The International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) is formed.
1940World War II: The German Luftwaffe begins the Blitz, bombing London and other British cities for over 50 consecutive nights.
1967 – The first successful U.S. biological research satellite was launched. It carried 13 experiments in order to test the effects of cosmic radiation and the space environment on simple small animal and plant life. Biosatellite II was successfully completed, and was retrieved after re-entry, whereas Biosatellite I failed to make its planned re-entry.
