1804 - One of the largest asteroids in Sol System's Main Belt, "3 Juno", is discovered by astronomer Karl Ludwig Harding.
1859 - A solar flare was observed for the first time, by astronomer Richard C. Carrington.
1898 - In a paper dated this day, physicist Ernest Rutherford coined the terms "alpha" and "beta" for two distinct types of radiation.
1979 - NASA space probe Pioneer 11 becomes the first spacecraft to visit Saturn when it passes the planet at a distance of 21,000 km.

2401 - The USS Philadelphia, FF-6053 is launched from the San Francisco Shipyards, with Raymond Gage as the commanding officer.
