Personal History

History: Salen is the heiress to a relatively successful logistics company, Doma Interplanetary Freight, operating out of the Beta Quadrant. While she was certainly capable of taking over the family business, she wanted to be out among the stars for her own reasons without the need to always be on the move. Though the Suliban have mostly stayed out of the Federation’s public consciousness, there was never any prohibition from being involved with them. Salen saw Starfleet as an opportunity to get out from under her parents’ expectations. She had a knack for machines and always wanted to know how starships worked. She had gone on more than one run with a Doma freighter and tried to help out in engineering in order to learn more.

Salen had strong feelings for an engineer on one ship in particular, but she felt self-conscious bordering on dysmphoric about her skin and how rough the texture was in comparison to other species for whom rough skin was an undesirable trait. When that engineer left the freighter to build and repair racing ships, Salen went through a depressive episode and almost didn’t complete her application to Starfleet. Her parents forced her to go through with the application process even though it was not what they wanted for her because they knew she would regret it. Salen deferred for a year in order to work on herself. She booked passage and spent time on Earth to become accustomed to human ways of doing things and spent that time as a librarian’s assistant.

As a coping mechanism for her bouts of depression, Salen took up cooking. She developed her own style of Suliban-Earth fusion food. Any time a Doma freighter takes a shipment near Earth, her parents send along a small care package of Suliban food ingredients. Her therapist, Dr. Yan encouraged her to share her cooking with her therapy group before leaving for the Academy. The group was convinced Salen should open a restaurant, but Salen was convinced they were polite. Dr. Yan certified Salen’s mental wellbeing.

In the Academy, Salen flourished academically and found that she loved to learn new things. When there was an accident during a practical exam in her second year, it inspired her to take on a minor in emergency response for non-medical personnel. No one was seriously hurt, but she had wished she could have done something in the moment. Salen was popular with every roommate she had as they would inevitably get to sample some of Salen’s cooking. She found out the hard way that while sharing food is a good way to introduce one’s self, it would not sustain a friendship. She had trouble bonding with her classmates in meaningful ways. Salen remained determined to do better on her first assignment.
