The SS Columbia was a Federation survey vessel in the 23rd century, and disappeared in 2236.
The ship was commissioned before the warp barrier was broken, and therefore had a maximum speed considerably slower than Constitution-class starships.
The Columbia crashed on Talos IV in 2236 while on a survey expedition in the unexplored Talos star group region for the American Continent Institute.
Fun fact:
The Columbia used a radio beam transmitter for distress signals.
The signals were keyed to cause interference that registered on starship sensors as unidentified objects traveling at the speed of light.
