Personal History

Amila is the youngest of four children and the only girl. Amila's family has been operating a large wine production business in the Orion system for several generations. Most of her family has chosen to stay in the family business, or to take employment in one of the other well-established merchant business in the Orion system. Like most Orion companies, her family has occasionally been pressured by the Syndicate to participate in ethically questionable activity. As Amila gew older she questioned her family's continued involvement placating the Syndicate, especially after one of their employees was murdered while on duty. Amila has always had strong, idealistic and patriotic feelings toward the Federation. Even as a child, Amila felt her familty should have reached out to the Federation for help to get themselves out from under the Syndicate's rule.

When she was a young child, Amila spent most of her time in vineyards or on merchant ships. As a teenager, Amila became involved in music and theater to keep herself busy and away from her family and the business. Amila is a gifted singer, dancer, and actress. She was blessed to have been regularly cast in various stage productions, including more than one large-scale production that required her to spend long hours at the theater in rehearsals, giving her an excuse to be away from home. When Amila was 17 she applied to Starfleet Academy, but was initially rejected. This was demoralizing at first, but she contintued working in theater, spending the next year studying for long hours so that she would be better situated when she applied again. When Amila applied again the following year, she was accepted. Amila was elated by the news, and saw this as her way to finally separate from her family, make her own way in life, and serve the Federation.

When Amila arrived at the Academy, she knew she would have to study hard to be successful. Her failed first attempt at being accepted into the Academy was a humbling experience, and it motivated her to push herself hard with her studies. Amila's roommate, Ashley, was also majoring in Science, and noticed that Amila seemed to feel out of place on Earth. Ashley made it a point to help Amila acclimate to human customs and make friends. Ashley quickly became a close confidante, and Amila considers Ashley to be a part of her chosen family. She feels a stronger connection to Ashley than she does her biological family. With Ashley's help and advice from her instructors, Amila flourished both academically and socially at the Academy. During Amila's sophomore year she took up performance again when she auditioned and was accepted into the Academy's female A Cappella group. She performed with them for her next three years at the Academy.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Science
Academy Minor(s): Chemistry, Temporal Mechanics
Hobbies and Pastimes: Singing, theater performance, dancing. Amila enjoys both dancing on stage or at the club. She always loves to spend time on the beach or boating, enjoying all water sports: swimming, skiing, inner-tubing, rock diving, or just laying out on the beach or on a boat deck listening to the wind and the waves.
Short-Term Goals: To prove herself a valuable member of her new crew, and to be trusted to take on important assignments and tasks
Long-Term Goals: Amila would like become the chief science officer, or maybe even a captain of a science research vessel in Starfleet. She also has aspirations that she might make a major break through in the study of temporal mechanics and causality effects.
Personality: : Amila knows how to perform, so even when she's feeling shy or insecure she comes across as confident and sure of herself. Close friends and confidants are often surprised when she opens up about her internal insecurities. Amila is prone to both rejection sensitivity and imposter syndrome.
Sense of Humor: Because of her theater background, Amila appreciates humor in all forms and across multiple cultural contexts. Her own sense of humor can be dry and sarcastic - a trait she picked up as a defense mechanism when she was still living on the Orion homeworld
Phobias: Failure, being disliked
Likes: Beaches, theater, music, fiction literature, sincerity, kindness, ice cream, chips and salsa
Dislikes: Cold weather, injustice or cruel actions, watermelon, blue cheese, food that is still alive when you are expected to eat it
Pet Peeves or Gripes: insincere people, feeling left out
Bad Habits or Vices: procrastination, or all out avoidance of things she is not interested in or situations that would make her uncomfortable; eating ice cream when she is sad
Achievements: Being cast as the female lead at age 17 in a large scale production of an Orion musical. The musical told the story of a young Orion woman who was born into poverty, but worked her way into a position of political influence and used that power to rebuild her community into a wealthy and productive player in Orion society. (In hindsight, she realizes this was clearly a propaganda piece, but she felt like a star at the time, enjoying the spotlight. The production was well-received and her performance was given positive reviews.)
Disappointments: Being rejected from Starfleet Academy initially; her family and their continued submission to the whims of the Syndicate
Illnesses: She's been fortunate to be healthy so far. When she joined Starfleet she had a pheremone suppressing implant placed. She has not had any issues with it
Strengths: Improvising, thinking quickly on her feet, coming up with alternate solutions to complex problems; her ability to hyperfocus on important tasks when she needs to
Weaknesses: She struggles to complete tasks she is not interested in. If she's not feeling engaged, she can become easily distracted and side-tracked
Fears: Amila worries that she will make a mistake and be kicked out of Starfleet Academy
Prejudices: As a naturally emotive person, Amila is uncomfortable around Vulcans
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Loose fitting pants with tapered legs, athletic shoes, form fitting shirts with modest necklines - usually crewneck or turtleneck
Distinguishing Features: Amila's large violet eyes clash with her auburn hair
Pets: None currently, but would like to have a parakeet or similar bird someday
Friends: Ashley Johansen, a human and Amila's first roommate at Starfleet Academy

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Not being accepted into Starfleet Academy; as a child being made fun of for her "Red hair and purple eyes."
Best Time: Finding her way at the Academy. It was a struggle at first, but her Sophomore through Senior years, she was leaving her dream life. She felt popular among friends, excelled in her classes, and was accepted into the female A Cappella group.
Most Crucial Experience: When Amila was twelve, she overheard her parents talking about the death of one of their employees. Amila was able to piece together that it was likely that the Syndicate had her assassinated, and that her parents were complicit in giving the Syndicate access. It was at this point that Amila began looking for ways to be away from home, and set her long term goals of joining Starfleet.
Role Model: Admiral Janeway. Although, she's never met Janeway, Amila is fascinated by her career path, and that she also started as a science officer and eventually became the Captain of a Starfleet vessel. Amila admires Janeway's fortitude when Voyager was stranded, and her continued service to Starfleet once Voyager returned. Amila also secretly admires Janeway's disregard for the temporal prime directive.
