Personal History

Ra'an is the youngest of four children and the only girl. Amila’s family has been operating a large wine production business in the Orion system for several generations. Most of her family has chosen to stay in the family business or to take employment in one of the other well-established merchant businesses in the Orion system. Like most Orion companies, her family had been occasionally pressured by the Syndicate to participate in ethically questionable activity. As Ra'an grew older, she questioned her family’s continued involvement placating the Syndicate. Ra'an has strong, patriotic feelings toward the Federation, and felt that with their help, her family should have been able to get themselves out from under the Syndicate’s rule.

When she was a child, Ra'an spent most of her time in vineyards or on merchant ships. As a teenager, Ra'an spent a majority of her free time in musical theater to keep herself busy and away from the family business. She’s a talented singer, dancer, and actress, and performed in a few large scale productions. When she was 17, she applied to Starfleet Academy and was rejected at first. She continued in theater, while also spending the next year studying profusely. When Ra'an applied again the following year, she was accepted. Ra'an was elated by the news, and saw this as her way to finally separate from her family, make her own way in life, and serve the Federation.

When Ra'an arrived at the Academy, she knew she had to study hard to be successful. Her failed first attempt at being accepted to the Academy was a humbling experience, and it motivated her to push herself harder with her studies. Her roommate, Ashley, was also studying the sciences, and noticed that Ra'an seemed to feel out of place on Earth, and made a point to help her acclimate to customs and make friends. Ashley quickly became a close confidante, and Ra'an considers Ashley to be a part of her chosen family - feeling more of a connection with her than she does her biological family. With Ashley’s help, and advice from Academy instructors, Ra'an flourished both academically and socially at the Academy. By Ra'an's sophomore year she was feeling confident in her ability to succeed in her studies, and took up music again, joining the women’s A Cappella group on campus, and performing with them during her next three years at the Academy.

Ra'an's first assignment out of the Academy was to the USS Titania, and she was thrilled to be assigned to a science vessel right away. She quickly learned that even as a midshipman she’d be given some great opportunities to participate in away missions. Her first major assignment on the Titania involved working undercover alongside the First Officer in a busy market as they tried to uncover illicit business dealings. When it was discovered that the illicit business was organ trade, and hundreds of storage units were recovered, Ra'an worked with her immediate supervisor, Lieutenant Samik, to find out as much information as possible about the organs and what they were used for. Ameen and Samik both made Ra’an feel like an important team member, giving her the confidence to continue to grow as a young officer.

Ra'an had been previously intimidated by most Vulcans, and tended to prejudge them, but Ra’an’s continued work with the Vulcan chief science officer opened her mind and helped her fight against these stereotypes. Samik often encouraged Ra’an as a young officer, and while they served together she gave Ra'an not only the confidence that she needed to speak up, but would open the floor for her to speak her mind to the rest of the crew when she had an idea to contribute. Ra’an credits those opportunities she was given for her subsequent promotions and other recognition that she received from the Captain during those years.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Science
Academy Minor(s): Chemistry, Temporal Mechanics
Hobbies and Pastimes: Singing, theater performance, dancing. Amila enjoys both dancing on stage or at the club. She always loves to spend time on the beach or boating, enjoying all water sports: swimming, skiing, inner-tubing, rock diving, or just laying out on the beach or on a boat deck listening to the wind and the waves.
Short-Term Goals: To keep up with all areas of science and not just her specialty; start a theater/drama group on the Titania.
Long-Term Goals: Amila publicly says that she hopes to become a chief science officer on a science research ship in Starfleet. Secretly she hopes to be a captain. She is working out the framework for an experiment that could be a major break-through in the study of temporal mechanics and causality effects.
Personality: Amila knows how to perform, so even when she's feeling shy or insecure she comes across as confident and sure of herself. Close friends and confidants are often surprised when she opens up about her internal insecurities. Amila is prone to both rejection sensitivity and imposter syndrome.
Sense of Humor: Because of her theater background, Amila appreciates humor in all forms and across multiple cultural contexts. Her own sense of humor can be dry and sarcastic - a trait she picked up as a defense mechanism when she was still living on the Orion homeworld
Phobias: Failure, being disliked
Likes: Beaches, theater, music, fiction literature, sincerity, kindness, ice cream, chips and salsa
Dislikes: Cold weather, injustice or cruel actions, watermelon, blue cheese, food that is still alive when you are expected to eat it
Pet Peeves or Gripes: insincere people, feeling left out
Bad Habits or Vices: procrastination, or all out avoidance of things she is not interested in or situations that would make her uncomfortable; eating ice cream when she is sad
Achievements: Being cast as the female lead at age 17 in a large scale production of an Orion musical. Recipient of the Starfleet Commendation Medal and the Achievement Medal.
Disappointments: Being rejected from Starfleet Academy initially; her family and their continued submission to the whims of the Syndicate
Illnesses: She's been fortunate to be healthy so far. When she joined Starfleet she had a pheremone suppressing implant placed. She has not had any issues with it
Strengths: Improvising, thinking quickly on her feet, coming up with alternate solutions to complex problems; her ability to hyperfocus on important tasks when she needs to
Weaknesses: She struggles to complete tasks she is not interested in. If she's not feeling engaged, she can become easily distracted and side-tracked
Fears: Failure primarily. Amila worries that she could make a recommendation to a commanding officer that ends up catastrophic.
Prejudices: As a naturally emotive person, Amila is uncomfortable around Vulcans
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Day to day wear is usually loose fitting pants with tapered legs and a fitted shirt with a modest neckline and running or workout out style shoes. When she dresses up her style tends to be whimsical and flirty.
Distinguishing Features: Amila’s eyes are a deep violet color, though most people notice the deep red tones of her thick hair
Pets: None currently, but if she weren’t in Starfleet she would likely be running an animal rehabilitation facility.
Friends: Ashley Johansen, a human and her first roommate at Starfleet Academy. Her family has become a second family for Amila, and continue to welcome her to celebrate holidays with them when she is able.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Not being accepted into Starfleet Academy; as a child being made fun of for her "Red hair and purple eyes."
Best Time: Her first promotion and recognition medal as an officer in Starfleet.
Most Crucial Experience: When Amila was twelve, she overheard her parents talking about the death of one of their employees. Amila was able to piece together that it was likely that the Syndicate had her assassinated, and that her parents were complicit in giving the Syndicate access. It was at this point that Amila began looking for ways to be away from home, and set her long term goals of joining Starfleet.
Role Model: Admiral Janeway. Though she’s never met the Admiral, Amila is fascinated by Admiral Janeway’s career path, starting as a science officer like herself and becoming the Captain of a Starfleet vessel. Amila has studied Janeway, and admires her fortitude when Voyager was stranded, and her continued service to Starfleet once Voyager returned.
