A minor planet is an astronomical object in direct orbit around the Sun (or more broadly, any star with a planetary system) that is neither a planet nor exclusively classified as a comet or asteroid.

Minor planets can be dwarf planets and larger orbiting asteroids. They can maintain their own individual and unique solar orbit, or they could also be found among asteroids in an asteroid belt.

There are seven classifications:

  • Class D
  • Class L
  • Class M
  • Class Y
  • Theta class
  • >unknown class
