1938 – Orson Welles broadcasts his radio adaptation of H. G. Wells' "The War of the Worlds". Despite informing the audience it is a play, it causes a massive panic in audience members who believe that it is real, and that aliens are invading Earth.
1985 – Space Shuttle Challenger lifts off for mission STS-61-A, its final successful mission.
