1701 – Astronomer Anders Celsius is born. He is most well-known for creating the Celsius / Centigrade temperature scale.
1955 – Engineer William Sanford Nye is born. Better known as "Bill Nye the Science Guy," he helped popularize and influence an entire generation regarding the world of science.
1971 – The Soviet space program's Mars 2 orbiter releases a descent module. Though it malfunctions and crashes, it is the first human-made object to reach the surface of Mars.
2001 – The Hubble Space Telescope makes two important discoveries regarding the extrasolar planet "Osiris": The planet's atmosphere was detected to have amounts of sodium, which led to the discovery of a hydrogen-based atmosphere surrounding the planet.
