1941 – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration first specified the minimum recommended daily requirements for vitamins and minerals. Some amounts were lower for children, and higher for a pregnant or lactating woman. Regulations were also given for proper labeling of foods with their dietary information.
1942 – Guion S. Bluford Jr. is born. He was the first black astronaut, and went into space on August 30, 1983, on board the Challenger shuttle.
