1979 - Comet "Howard-Koomen-Michels" ("SOLWIND I") collided with the Sun, becoming the first recorded comet to collide with Sun, and the first discovered by a spacecraft.
1983 - NASA astronaut Guion S. Bluford Jr. became the first black American astronaut to travel in space.
1984 - NASA mission "STS-41-D": space shuttle Discovery takes off on its maiden voyage.
