1656 – Astronomer, geophysicist and mathematician Edmond Halley is born; most noted for discovering, tracking, and calculating the orbit of "Halley's Comet".
1895 – Wilhelm Röntgen first observes x-rays, during an experiment with electricity, at Würzburg University, theorizing the medical implications of such radiation.
1980 – Scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California announce the discovery of a 15th moon orbiting Saturn.
1984 – NASA launches Space Shuttle Discovery in order to retrieve two disabled communication satellites (this was the first time this was done).
