Personal History
Jonathan was born in Los Angeles, the only child of Anthony and Maria Maxwell, an engineering professor and nurse practicioner, respectively. When he was little, Jonathan was extremely inquisitive, taking small objects apart just to see how they worked. This led to scoldings from his mother on more than one occasion. His father, however, was pleased to see that the apple didn't fall far from the tree, and encouraged development of Jonathan's potential. As Jonathan got older, his father brought him along to assist in one of his hobbies, restoring vintage cars and small flyers. When he was a teen, Jonathan converted part of his room into his own workshop where he built a number of gadgets and created several computer programs. He was also a part of his school's robotics club and even helped out in his father's engineering department. While his father developed Jonathan's talents, his mother nurtured his mind by sharing her small library with him.
Since he was a little boy, Jonathan knew he wanted to be around machines and systems when he grew up, but he wasn't sure what exactly he wanted to do. He enjoyed working with his father, but he was unsure if he wanted to continue on that path. His answer came when a Star Fleet recruiter came to his school. The recruiter told Jonathan of all the places he had traveled to and the duties he had performed. He also told Jonathan that he knew of his engineering and programming talents and that Star Fleet could definitely use someone of his natural skill. That stirred a sense of adventure within Jonathan, he wanted to forge his own path, not just follow in one that was laid before him. Initially, Jonathan's father was disappointed that he was not going to follow in his footsteps, but eventually, he realized that Jonathan was becoming his own person and he had no right to hold him back.
In his senior year of high school, Jonathan was assigned a computer science project with his best friend, Jeremy Olson. Jonathan did most of the work while Jeremy mainly slacked off. Jonathan addressed it, but eventually let it go as he preferred working alone anyway. But when it was time to turn in the project, Jeremy took credit for all of the work and accused Jonathan of plagiarism, producing several pieces of fabricated evidence. Because of his exemplary academic record and evidence he had provided, Jonathan was cleared of all charges and Jeremy was severely reprimanded. Since that incident, Jonathan had cut all ties with Jeremy and resolved to never trust another human soul again.
Jonathan kept up his academic excellence once he started at the Academy, but instructors remarked that he was introverted and made no attempt to be on friendly terms with his classmates, going so far as to being cold towards anyone who tried to befriend him. Not even counseling sessions were of any help in trying to break Jonathan out of his self-made shell. Eventually, everyone except for one person gave up on trying to get close to him. That person was his classmate, April Gilbert. She stayed with him even when people walked away whether he wanted her around or not. She made Jonathan realize that if he wanted to be part of Star Fleet, he would have to allow people into his life again. Eventually, Jonathan told her why he couldn't trust anyone, something he had never told anyone, not even the Academy's counselors. She began to make it her own personal project to rebuild his trust in others. In time, she became Jonathan's best friend and he began to come out of his bubble. When graduation came, they resolved to keep in touch no matter what.
