1812 – Johann Gottfried Galle, German astronomer and academic, is born. He is known for being the first person to view the planet Neptune (and know what he was looking at).

• Fellow astronomer Urbain Le Verrier had predicted the existence and position of the planet, and sent the coordinates to Galle, asking for verification.
