1897 – Famed pilot Amelia Earhart is born. She would go on to become the first woman to fly alone over the Atlantic Ocean.
1933 – Dr. William F. Rienhoff Jr. became the first surgeon to perform a successful total lung removal operation.
1954 – For the first time, the sound of a human voice was transmitted beyond the ionosphere, and returned to Earth after reflecting off the moon.
1969 – NASA's Apollo 11, the craft that helped put the first human on the Moon, splashes down safely in the Pacific Ocean.
