|History= Both Altairi’s parents were former Starfleet engineers who had quit their jobs to raise him. As a result, he grew up hearing stories about how his father ended up using a warp core as a projectile, or how his mother fought off a group of terrorists with nothing but a hyperspanner. Each story ended up adding more to his growing desire to join Starfleet. So, he applied himself and at the age of 13, asked his parents to teach him everything they knew. By the time he was 16, he had a vast theoretical knowledge of a ship’s systems, but very little practical knowledge on the subject.

Altairi had always been a social child, and tended to make friends wherever he could. However, as a half-human, he struggled with fitting in with other Ktarians and could also be the victim of bullying. But, he continued looking on the bright side of life. When he started his informal engineering training, he tried not to let it interfere with his social life. However, he stopped making new friends, but instead focused on maintaining his past friendships. Some people moved off-world, but he still maintained contact with them.

Despite a supposed age of enlightenment in the populace of the

existence as a threat to their own heritage. As such, his human roots

clear that he would never truly belong. But, the realization also

served to provide all the more reason to find a posting elsewhere. And

studies, and in time, he mustered the theoretical knowledge comparable

Once he had accumulated enough knowledge, he felt that he was ready to enlist. So, as soon as he turned 17, he said goodbye to his planet and headed for Star Fleet Academy. During his years in the academy, he picked up an interest in holonovels. By day, he was just trying to get by in class, but at night, he would be writing stories and playing them out in the holodeck. During classes, he would often tune himself out of reality and end up realizing that he missed a few valuable seconds. The issue never really affected too much, as he was always able to make up the lost time. However, he phased out during an engineering exam and upon realizing, ended up rushing through it. In the end, he achieved a passing score, but due to his rushing, he forgot to answer a question. Although, he managed to keep himself in check for future exams. Unlike on Ktaria, no one in the academy seemed to have an issue with his hybrid nature, and so, he found it much easier to make friends. In the end, the only thing that made friendships hard was his near constant cheerful attitude.

Personal History

As the child of two former Starfleet Engineers, Altairi would grow up with tales of his parents’ exploits, and more importantly, a need to follow in their footsteps. With the build-up of ambition would come years of studying textbooks and the knowledge set forth by some of the most prestigious engineers in the service. All the while, the young Ktarian began to surround himself with others; some with similar goals in life and who quickly became his closest confidants. Though, his bubbly and social personality would not be enough for many to see past his own hybrid nature.

Despite a supposed age of enlightenment in the populace of the century, there were those on Ktaria who treated Altairi’s very existence as a threat to their own heritage. As such, his human roots would paint him as a target amongst others, and would make it very clear that he would never truly belong. But, the realization also served to provide all the more reason to find a posting elsewhere. And despite his own struggles, the aspiring engineer persisted in his studies, and in time, he mustered the theoretical knowledge comparable to a sophomore engineering cadet. Though, Altairi maintained far less practical knowledge and experience than the latter.

On his seventeenth birthday, Altairi made the long-awaited decision to send in his application for Starfleet Academy; days later, being overjoyed when he was accepted. Half-nervously, the soon-to-be cadet made his final goodbyes to his friends known, finally stopping with an especially tearful goodbye to his parents. And, at that point, he received the most cherished late-birthday present in his life, a custom-made cadet uniform specially requested by his mother and father. From then on, with all goodbyes said, and all other business tended to, Altairi found himself climbing the steps toward a full career faster and faster.

As an academy student, the cadet took care to build connections, and otherwise establish failsafes to guarantee his success. However, he struggled very little on account of years of preparation, and his own befriending of the majority of the people he met with little fear of his once-mocked hybrid nature being used against him. Alongside, Altairi took on an interest in holodeck programming, the one subject that always had seemed to mystify him. But, in time, even such bewilderment began to vanish.

When he graduated, the now Midshipman Hydish received his first posting aboard the USS Nikola Tesla, quickly finding that his academy experience prepared him for little of the emotional stresses that came with the job. At first, he figured an embarrassing failure to report in professionally would be the end of his struggles, but Altairi’s worldview soon began to falter; and he soon found himself aboard the dilapidated USS Nightingale. And even though the Tesla eventually brought the medical vessel back to relative life, and safely escorted her from the Romulan neutral zone, it would be at the cost of much of the ship’s crew, memories of corpses souring the once idealistic officer’s perception.

When all came to a close, Altairi seemed to return more or less to relative peace, though the sudden disappearance of the Tesla’s former chief engineer, and the reassignment of the ship’s captain and chief of the boat kept him further from returning to more familiar and social behavior.

This ended up starting a full fist fight and Altairi was easily ganged up upon. He came home with bruises all over.
Best Time: When he was 16, Altairi’s parents took him off-world to visit the Altair system, which he was named after. The family ended up having all kinds of fun together and he would continue to cherish the memory.
Most Crucial Experience: Altairi got lost in a mountain range at the age of 8. All alone, he went for a full 3 hours before his parents found him. The incident caused him to feel the need to surround himself with others and was what made him such a social person.
Role Model: Altairi looks up to Montgomery “Scotty” Scott, who had served on the Enterprise NCC-1701 as a faithful engineering officer, which is exactly what Altairi aspires to be.
