Personal History
As the child of two former Starfleet Engineers, Altairi would grow up with tales of his parents’ exploits, and more importantly, a need to follow in their footsteps. With the build-up of ambition would come years of studying textbooks and the knowledge set forth by some of the most prestigious engineers in the service. All the while, the young Ktarian began to surround himself with others; some with similar goals in life and who quickly became his closest confidants. Though, his bubbly and social personality would not be enough for many to see past his own hybrid nature.
Despite a supposed age of enlightenment in the populace of the century, there were those on Ktaria who treated Altairi’s very existence as a threat to their own heritage. As such, his human roots would paint him as a target amongst others, and would make it very clear that he would never truly belong. But, the realization also served to provide all the more reason to find a posting elsewhere. And despite his own struggles, the aspiring engineer persisted in his studies, and in time, he mustered the theoretical knowledge comparable to a sophomore engineering cadet. Though, Altairi maintained far less practical knowledge and experience than the latter.
On his seventeenth birthday, Altairi made the long-awaited decision to send in his application for Starfleet Academy; days later, being overjoyed when he was accepted. Half-nervously, the soon-to-be cadet made his final goodbyes to his friends known, finally stopping with an especially tearful goodbye to his parents. And, at that point, he received the most cherished late-birthday present in his life, a custom-made cadet uniform specially requested by his mother and father. From then on, with all goodbyes said, and all other business tended to, Altairi found himself climbing the steps toward a full career faster and faster.
As an academy student, the cadet took care to build connections, and otherwise establish failsafes to guarantee his success. However, he struggled very little on account of years of preparation, and his own befriending of the majority of the people he met with little fear of his once-mocked hybrid nature being used against him. Alongside, Altairi took on an interest in holodeck programming, the one subject that always had seemed to mystify him. But, in time, even such bewilderment began to vanish.
When he graduated, the now Midshipman Hydish received his first posting aboard the USS Nikola Tesla, quickly finding that his academy experience prepared him for little of the emotional stresses that came with the job. At first, he figured an embarrassing failure to report in professionally would be the end of his struggles, but Altairi’s worldview soon began to falter; and he soon found himself aboard the dilapidated USS Nightingale. And even though the Tesla eventually brought the medical vessel back to relative life, and safely escorted her from the Romulan neutral zone, it would be at the cost of much of the ship’s crew, memories of corpses souring the once idealistic officer’s perception.
When all came to a close, Altairi seemed to return more or less to relative peace, though the sudden disappearance of the Tesla’s former chief engineer, and the reassignment of the ship’s captain and chief of the boat kept him further from returning to more familiar and social behavior. Just prior to the launch of his next assignment, the USS Philadelphia, Altairi was called to the office of his new C.O., Captain Jennifer Braggins. Between Starfleet’s failure to assign the ship a qualified chief engineer, as well as the unwillingness of his fellow officers to claim the mantle, the Ktarian found out that he was the only candidate for the position. Reluctantly he agreed, serving as chief engineer to the Philadelphia, and later the USS Aquila.
The engineer’s first mission aboard the Aquila saw him participate in the search for a group of Ferengi merchants who had disappeared into the Gamma Quadrant. Aboard one of the ship’s shuttles, he and the away team were able to locate and board the merchants’ derelict vessel, only to trigger its emergency detonation subroutine. Altairi was able to successfully engage the emergency transporters and ferry most of the away team to safety. With time till detonation decreasing rapidly, however, they would be forced to leave one petty officer behind. An unpleasant addition to the knowledge of her death, Altairi would later learn of the disappearance of the shuttle that had ferried him there, with the rest of the team aboard.
While the Aquila’s mission would conclude with the discovery of both the Ferengi and a colony of Dominion War survivors, a triumph he was able to witness in person, Altairi would go on to be haunted by the memory of his near-death experience, and by the faces of those who didn’t make it.
What followed was Altairi’s reassignment to the Philadelphia, marking his third ship-to-ship transfer and his second term aboard the vessel.
With his new assignment now designated a key player in Operation Ursa Major, Altairi would be dispatched to the Parhelia system in search of the captured USS Callisto. When Starfleet attempted to rescind the mission, citing concerns over a possible war with the Cardassians, Altairi joined a crew of mutineers led by Captain Braggins and assisted in the hijacking of the USS Yeager.
Following the conclusion of Ursa Major, and the subsequent judgement of Starfleet command, Altairi’s fourth official transfer would place him aboard the next vessel to bear the name Yeager.
