Holography is the science of producing holographic technology, or holograms.

Numerous and various species employ this technology, and it is used in everything from entertainment to scientific aids. Common across these species' use of holo-technology is the idea that photons can be contained in force fields, thus creating the desired image or images. Due to this common theory on holography, what is created by one species can often be compatible with the holographic systems of another, though there may be a need for slight modifications.

On Earth, the technology came into existence during the 20th Century.

During the 24th century, Dr. Lewis Zimmerman greatly advanced the technology, earning himself the title of "the father of modern holography." One of his greatest contributions to this field was the invention of the holomatrix, which makes complex holographic programs possible.

One specialty job created by such technology is a holo-engineer, a person who creates and manages the codes involved in holograms.

There is also a discipline called holophotograpy, in which a professional photographer is able to capture a moment able to continue moving inside of a frame.
