Personal History
Born to a physician and the captain of a merchant cargo ship, Martin grew up on Earth, raised by his mother Marianne. His father, Joseph, was killed only 6 months after Martin was born, when his ship was raided and destroyed by Orion pirates. As such, Martin never knew his father, but found a father figure in Warren Cole, a friend of his mother’s and a classically trained musician. Marianne and Warren encouraged Martin to explore music and the arts, and fostered in him a life-long love of all music, and an appreciation of all the other arts. Some of Martin’s fondest memories are of attending operas, plays, and concerts with his mother and Warren.
Martin graduated as valedictorian from his high school, and then went on to college, where he received Bachelor’s degrees in Voice Performance and Anthropology. While pursuing these degrees, Martin met Sarah, a young biologist, and the two began a relationship that lasted for 3 years, until Martin left for Graduate School. During this time, he also became friends with Warren’s nephew, Isaac Cole, an aspiring xenolinguist, who sparked Martin’s interest in Klingon opera and other non-human musics, and taught him to speak Klingon. Martin and Isaac would continue to be lifelong friends, and have to this day never lost touch after graduation. In grad school, Martin received a degree in Ethnomusicology, writing his thesis on the fusion of folk musics from around the globe that resulted from the unification of Earth. With three degrees under his belt, Martin received a teaching fellowship at the Daystrom Institute, where he had also been accepted as a doctoral candidate. While at Daystrom, Martin was reunited with Sarah, also a teaching fellow, and they immediately resumed their relationship, much to the disdain of the Daystrom faculty. Another 2 years passed, and after 8 total years of school for both of them, Martin received a doctorate in Xenomusicology, and Sarah a degree in Xenobiology. Soon after they received these degrees, the pair was engaged, and ready to wed.
The two were married on Earth during a beautiful ceremony, with Isaac Cole as best man and Warren officiating, and spent the first week of married life in the tropics, before they both embarked on research missions for their work. Sarah was off to one of the planets visited by the Romulans on their route away from Vulcan, to research the subtle, yet critical differences between their morphologies. Martin on the other hand was off to Klingon space, where, accompanied by Isaac, he would travel throughout Klingon colonies discreetly gathering the music of the Klingons, particularly their operas, in order to analyze and preserve them. Both missions seemed safe enough, but tragedy struck. The research vessel Sarah was on was raided and destroyed by a Romulan patrol in the neutral zone, and they never made it to their destination. Full details of the incident were never released. Devastated, Martin postponed his trip, and returned to Federation space immediately to plan and attend Sarah’s memorial service. He then mourned his wife as he worked, wearing black the entirety of his journey, and dedicating each article and recording with a simple “for Sarah”.
During their time in Klingon space, Martin and Isaac traveled on the fringes of Klingon space, staying hidden from Klingon military patrols, and collecting stories, songs, and rituals from the people in the colonies. During this time, Martin began to work on a book about Klingon music, and its important function in the fierce, honor-obsessed warrior society. Martin and relied heavily on Isaac during this period, as he was still grieving Sarah, and was unable to contact his family frequently. Isaac had also taught Martin the Klingon language when they were in college together, an asset that would be invaluable in his work.
After just over 2 years abroad in Klingon space with Isaac, Martin returned to Earth again, for the wedding of his mother to prominent political advisor George Rathbone. From his mother’s marriage, Martin gained a supportive stepfather in George, and a younger sibling, his new stepsister Lauren. He also gained two little nieces, Mary and Lucy, and a nephew, Thomas. All three are very fond of “Uncle Marty”, and look forward to his visits. After the wedding, Martin and Isaac decided to revisit Klingon space, and spent 2 years there, only to be attacked by Klingon raiders on his return, suffering severe burns on his right arm and leg while pulling Isaac to safety, which he chose to keep, as a reminder that sacrifices must always be made. While recovering Martin served as a guest lecturer at the Daystrom Institute for 3 years, and resolved that upon recovery, he would join Starfleet, in order to continue his research in safety, and to promote peaceful, cooperative sharing of culture and information by all species.
