1857 – Astronomer Edward Emerson Barnard is born. He was a pioneer in celestial photography, he made the first photographic discovery of a comet, photographed the Milky Way, and discovered the fifth moon of Jupiter.
1962 – NASA launches Explorer 16, a micro-meteoroid investigation satellite.
