Cybernetics is the study of complex artificial intelligence systems.
The systems in question usually run on a positronic matrix, and are often encased inside robotic-like technological machinery.
People
Scientists who study and practice in this field referred to as cyberneticists.
A full cybernetic being is often referred to as an android.
Bynars are a partially cybernetic species, due to voluntarily having their parietal lobe removed after birth and replaced with a synaptic processor.
Implants
Mechanical replacements for body parts are called cybernetic implants.
The cybernetic implants used by the Borg to augment their victims' bodies are often specifically referred to as Borg implants.
- Once augmented, Borg cannot often survive without their cybernetic implants. Conversely, the implants cease to function once the biological portions of the being are damaged enough.
