A positronic brain.

Created originally by Doctor Noonien Soong, the positronic brain consists of an artificial neural network designed to imitate the humanoid brain, and therefore is capable of artificial sentience. It is extremely sophisticated, using the decay of positrons to form the neural network, and few scientists have been able to replicate Soong's results.

A plasma shock is typically enough to overload a positronic brain.

As of 2364, Data, one of Dr. Soong's positronic androids, had an ultimate storage capacity of 800 quadrillion bits and a processing speed of 60 trillion operations per second.

By 2371, positronic technology had advanced to the stage where implants could replace some of the functions of a damaged organic brain, although there are considerable ethical difficulties inherent in this type of procedure.

As of Stardate 20811.13, New – a positronic android created by the Romulan scientist, Dr. Rebban – has an ultimate storage capacity of 125 petabytes and a processing speed of 68 trillion floating point operations per second (TFLOPS). His maximum lifting capability is 1,814.37 kilograms, and his maximum land speed on flat ground is 75 kilometres per hour. New has no external device for deactivation (no “off” switch). New has an active “firewall” that prevents connections to his positronic matrix without his permission. New’s positronic matrix can be accessed via a fold out panel on the back of his neck: this opened by pressing the control at the base of his skull.
