Personal History
Jim Bowie was born prematurely in Lewisburg Kentucky in the midst of an F5 Tornado. The maternity ward was heavily damaged and the newborn and his mother were trapped for a time. He spent the first month of his life in the hospital. The survival of mother and child was deemed a miracle of sorts, and he was given the name of the family’s famous ancestor.
He was the darling of his siblings, but it didn’t spoil the boy, it gave him an appreciation of family that he knew many people didn’t have. He learned to protect himself from his brothers, and his sisters taught him to be polite to women. He grew quickly and by the time he was 12, he had reached 6’ in height. Always rough housing, exploring the woods near their family estate, or engaging in team sports right up to and including high school.
School work wasn’t his passion except when it came to technical matters. His skill with computers emerged early as did his love of languages. While returning from hiking one day he spotted a smoke trail leading to a downed fighter. At the risk of his own life he pulled the unconscious pilot to safety, and realizing the imminent danger to nearby homes, he managed to uncouple the fuel cell from the small plane and carried it away before the fire could cause it to explode.
His father assumed he would join the family business, but Jim had other ideas. He had met a Star Fleet Officer at a university recruiting forum, who had heard of his actions in saving the pilot. William Bodash made quite an impression on the young man, and he used his inheritance to travel to San Francisco and enroll in Star Fleet Academy. His father was outraged, and they haven’t spoken since. Jim was very popular at the Academy, and had a few romances, including a rumor regarding a lovely instructor, which was never proven.
After completing a 2 year term on the USS Essex, he was promoted and given a choice of assignments. He chose SPECOPS, having served with an officer who had been there himself.
