Assimilation is the process by which the Borg add new members and new technology to the Collective.
Every species the Borg encounter are assessed to determine whether its biological and/or technological distinctiveness was considered worthy to add, and what position they should be assigned.
Whether or not a person wished to be assimilated was irrelevant. When a person is assimilated, their neural pathways are restructured to link them to a single collective mind, and to augment their
bodies with cybernetic technology. The end result was a new Borg drone.

- Observations in 2368 showed an assimilation process of tubules into a victim's neck
- These tubes inserted nanoprobes into the bloodstream, beginning the conversation process
- The Borg preferred to assimilate in groups
- When a starship was captured, it was stripped down for parts
