Ryant led a perfectly ordinary life up until his early twenties; school, work, the odd romance here and there. However, his father had borrowed money for business capital from the sort of people you shouldn't really borrow from with any sort of faith. When they came to collect, too soon, Ekan had to refuse.
He refused once more.
Then they came for his family.
The enforcer they sent to Ryant's apartment was surprised by the man himself coming home early. There was a scuffle, a stumble, and Ryant managed to kill the enforcer with their own weapon. The panic-driven coverup (not excluding using the phaser to vaporise the body) was rapid and thorough - but his flight from the residence was not.
The sharks caught up to him, but rather than kill him in turn for the sake of the dead enforcer, they offered him a job as a cleaner to pay down his father's debt, and Ryant's own. He earned a reputation for being discreet, fast, and efficient; it was never quite enough to get him the nest egg he needed to get out from under the syndicates, though. He spent a decade working for various crime families and unsavoury individuals, contributing no small part towards the effort to keep them ahead of the law and out of jail. If there's no evidence to find, any investigation has a hole.
Now that Grant's offer has given him the leap he required, he needs to weather the coming storm. It is unlikely any of his previous employers will simply allow him to go on his merry way.
