• Star "51 Pegasi" is discovered to be the first major star (apart from Earth's Sun to have a planet (and extrasolar planet) orbiting around it.

• Khan Noonien Singh's "Chrysalis Island" is attacked, where the Augment leader had bred a lethal bacteria for wide-spread use against the world. The island is destroyed, and Khan flees.

• The "Big Ear" at the Ohio State University Radio Observatory ends its full-time search for extraterrestrial intelligence radio survey, having run continuously for 22 years, beginning in 1973.

• Project Phoenix begins looking for extraterrestrial transmissions using the Parkes Observatory radio telescope in New South Wales, Australia, the largest telescope in the Southern Hemisphere.
