Sun-Tzu Class Perspective

When Yoritomo (1147-99), a son of a slain Minamoto clan leader, who had been exiled to Kwanto in eastern Japan at the time of his fathers death, learned that the Taira clan leader, Kiyomori (1118-81), had ordered him to be executed, he raided the white standard of the Minamoto family and took to the field. At first the Taira military forces in Kwanto almost annihilated his troops, but his ranks grew steadily with men who were discontent with the harsh Taira rule. Within two years Yoritomo and his army drove Taira out of Kwanto, and in 1183 they advanced upon and seized the capital at Kyoto. They then turned west where the Taira were still powerful and gradually reduced their numbers. The Taira family were finally destroyed in April 1185, in the fierce naval Battle of Dan-no-ura, which is at the western end of the Inland Sea. Much of the Minamotos' success was due to the brilliant military leadership of Yoritomo's young half brother, Yoshitsune (1159-89), of whom Yoritomo became increasingly suspicious. Yoshitsune fled to the north where he later committed hari-kari. In 1191, Yoritomo, who by that time had gained military control of the whole empire, visited the emperor in Kyoto who appointed him Sei-i-tai-Shogun for life. He was the first to receive this title.

USS Yoritomo DD-4019 is the second starship to bear the name.
