Captain's Log, Stardate 20004.11

Lieutenant Commander Mortarr K'ang, Commanding Officer of the USS Yoritomo reporting.

We have returned from our first mission; first mission for this vessel, her crew and her commander. Almost like thieves in the night we were whisked off on our mission to locate the USS Whitney, recover her and the data she carried within her databanks. Rear Admiral Kwalin, then CINC of Star Fleet Intelligence, sent us off with no information whatsoever, simply imparting to us upon departure that both crews and ships were expendable in recovery of this data. After a relatively uneventful journey, marked by a few strange phenomena of ghost-like visits by crewmen from the Whitney, we managed to locate her, adrift, though relatively undamaged. Closer inspection revealed a hull breach, caused from an overloaded phaser from within. We dispatched two Away Teams to the Whitney, one headed to Engineering and the other headed to the Bridge. Shortly after their transport, two crewmembers, Ens Longbow, over on the Whitney and Ens Dreadmane, back on the Yoritomo, both lost control of themselves and attacked fellow crew members. We now know this to be a side effect of the phasing field and no charges have been pressed, nor will it go on their records. The Whitney also phased from view completely undetectable. While we were attempting to locate it, we suffered a hull breach, from no apparent cause. Research after the fact shows we were hit by a Phase Cannon. As you will note in the appropriate sensor logs and other telemetry attached to this log, our Deflector Shields were up and functioning at the time we were hit. This has serious implications for the future, as I will note later on. Our team in the Engineering section of the Whitney was able to retrieve some data, but Ens Longbow up in the Bridge did the most; she was handed a data disk by the CO of the Whitney, who was in the process of setting the vessel's self-destruct system. Unable to persuade him to cease that function and also unable to stop it in time, Ens Longbow correctly ordered both teams to evacuate as the Whitney had phased back to our reality. Both Away Teams were safely evacuated, and we quickly exited the area to protect ourselves from the explosion to follow. This was a Pyrrhic victory, because we lost a good crew, CO and vessel because of one man's desire to pursue illegal technological research. The Federation has outlawed phase technology, yet Rear Admiral Kwalin thought himself above those laws or was he acting on orders from above him? We will only know once we catch him, for he has fled to parts unknown. I believe he also has the knowledge of Phase Technology, and may start over elsewhere and sell that to the highest bidder. Having safely returned to Star Base 1, I have been notified to meet with Fleet Admiral Stormbringer, along with Lieutenant Longbow. Oh, yes we received notification of our promotions on our way back. I wish I felt as though I had earned mine. Midshipman Faust has invited me to accompany him and 4 other Engineering crewmen on a white water rafting trip. It sounds like just the thing I need after this mission.
