Earth-Kzin Wars
Some say that Kzinti were a different breed before the Earth-Kzin Wars. Most secular historians agree that the Wars had a culling effect on Kzin society that divided their strongest and most aggressive motivations. Orthodox traditions, as good as “law” in Kzin society, propagandized personal honor and the honor of the Patriarchy, and ferocious Kzinti Heroes impatiently charged into battle to be the first to secure victory, often before they were properly prepared. For millennia, such traditions led Kzinti to nothing but “warranted” victory. Despite their initial superiority in technology, however, their traditions repeatedly failed them during the infamous Earth-Kzin Wars. As Kzinti struggled to comprehend the significance of their unprecedented defeats, they gradually formulated motivations that very likely could have employed prewar resources successfully enough to attain victory over the defending Humans. However, it was too late in the aftermath of their four repelled attacks, as succeeding Kzinti could foresee previously unknown advantages to cooperation with Humans, and their band of allies, and they signed the losing side of the Treaty of Sirius, their fourth truce with Humans. However, the post-war Patriarchy was a dismantled and disarmed society, and post-war Kzin was struggling to put out the fires of anarchy. One such “fire,” the Riit, or Royal, Family, owes its longevity to the struggle against new developments within Kzin society during the course of the War and especially after the fourth and final Kzin defeat versus Human-led forces some 350 years ago.

Royal Family
The Riit, or Royal, Family of Kzin has a long history of producing heirs of the Patriarchy, including the Highest of Kzin. Modern Kzin society both fears and also honors their Patriarch, the Highest of Kzin, and his extended Riit Family, members of which command the “police” force in corvette-like starships. The Patriarchal mandate is to preserve Kzin traditions while maintaining its means for doing so among an “international” community of related societies from divergent worlds, including Caitian, Aulacri, Draylaxian, Ferasan, and Mirak. While favoring cooperation with alien races as the best possible outcome for all involved, it maintains its characteristic Kzintosh-dominated society, and favors a “survival of the fittest” process through competition, including warfare whenever possible. To that end, the Riit Family solicits the cooperation of the Order of Black Priests. The Order is an autonomous, prejudiced force with the power to cull Kzin kits for the preservation of established Kzin society; namely, it recruits rare black kits as its own, it redeploys rare telepathic kits to special institutions, and it aborts undesirable Kzinrret kits. The Order bears its name because of its renowned garb of black pelts handed down from generation to generation. Despite the combined strength of the Riit Family alliance with the Black Priests, the Patriarchy feels threatened by a number of challenges, and it thus strives to balance its policy responses to these in a way that securely maintains both its sovereignty and its symbiotic relationships with others, including members of the United Federation of Planets.

Internal and Foreign Policy
Perhaps next to the Highest of Kzin is Suits-Riit, a Kzin noble, relative of the Patriarch, and a descendant of the ancestral Rritt-Pride. He has many powerful allies among the Black Priests, the Circle of Conservers, the Eye of the Patriarchy, and all of the Great Prides. Nevertheless, his efforts to enforce Kzin law and order throughout the Patriarchy must continually overcome a growing number of difficult challenges.

One potential challenge is a growing number of individual Kdaptist extremists. In the wake of Kzin losses during and after the Earth-Kzin Wars, faith-wrecked seceders of Orthodox traditions, such as Kdapt-Captain, who survived a traumatic near-death experience during the War in which he claimed to have seen the Human God, formed new traditions. Kdapt-Captain became the self-proclaimed Kdapt-Preacher and founder of Kdaptism, best known for its grotesque prayer rituals in which adherents don masks of Human flesh in an effort to fool the Human God into blessing them with the victory he apparently granted Humans during the War. Furthermore, over the centuries, Kdaptist traditions have grown and splintered into numerous minority sects favoring many other races, such as Klingon Kdaptists who don masks of Klingon flesh. The Patriarchy has outlawed the use of fresh flesh masks in these traditions as doing so poses a threat to established truces with other races, but individual extremists still seek out new faces to this day.

Perhaps the greatest fear of the Patriarchy is the furtive spread of hybrid speciation—especially its potential to establish a matriarchal foothold—counter to maintenance of its own sexually dimorphic society wherein Kzintoshi are sentient but Kzinrretti are sub-sapient. Thus, the Riit Family continues to administer traditional kit policies, as enforced through the Order of Black Priests, and refuses to acknowledge the existence of sentient Kzinrretti, despite occasional pressure to the contrary.

Language
Kzinti speak Heroes’ Tongue, their only language. The language, however, enjoys a great variety of modes, and includes detailed body language. When spoken, it sounds like a high-pitched cacophonic orchestra to Humans. When written, it resembles a variety of punctuation marks, like this, for example: .‘.;,.;,.‘,.‘,.;,., .‘,.’,.‘,.’,’.

Currency
Kzinti do not use currency; they use the honor system. Strakh, or honor, often defined by an individual’s name, or lack thereof, is as good as “currency” in Kzin society, making one Kzin noble and another servant.

The Patriarchy is an interstellar state in the Alpha Quadrant, and the ruling governmental body of the Kzinti people.

Their leader is referred to as the "Highest of Kzin."

At some point before 2269, the Kzinti government signed the "Treaty of Sirius", which forbade them all weapons beyond police vessels, as well as related equipment.

 • Many Kzinti continued to seek out weapons, regardless of their illegality.

A star chart of its territory in treaty boundary quadrant 0 showed it encompassing such systems as Achernar, Aldebaran, Alpha Carinae (Canopus), Antos, Cochrane, Gamma Hydra, Medusa, Menkar, and Questar M-17, as well as the site of the Kalandan outpost.
