History

The current Sun-Tzu-Class is the result of a need for Star Fleet to develop a fast, sleek, maneuverable multi-function vessel capable of short to medium length missions across the Federation.

Surprisingly agile and well armed for her size; the Sun-Tzu was a major success on the front lines, especially when working with other smaller vessels – their speed and firepower allowing them to surround and overpower even the largest of opponents when fielded in flotilla- or squadron-sized groups. When hostilities ended, Star Fleet Command authorized the continuation of the class and due to their short construction time, the Sun-Tzu-Class quickly became one of the most numerable types in Star Fleet service; with Destroyer flotillas a common sight on the borders and providing convoy escorts through the fringes of Federation Space.

Recent conflicts showed that, despite early successes, the class had fallen behind the times in terms of firepower and survivability. Following the destruction of the USS Sheridan at the Battle of Starbase 157, all Sun-Tzu class Destroyers were recalled and subjected to extensive refits that amounted to an almost total rebuild: the engineering layout was changed and a second nacelle was added, mounted ventrally rather than dorsally. The Destroyer's offensive firepower was also upgraded, with four Torpedo launchers and fire control sensor pod being installed in a dorsal "rollbar" reminiscent of the 23rd Century Miranda class.

The "Mk 2" as the refit has become known, has served Star Fleet faithfully and reliably for close to a decade.
