Personal History

Born on New Caspia shortly after the Federation/Romulan War ended, Varani had a fairly typical childhood. She was far away from the problems of the core worlds, and most of the galaxy's issues seemed to be taking place on the far side of the Federation. From an early age, Varani was an engineer. She would constantly make things with bits of machines lying around - even if she had to take something apart to get those pieces. Once, she built an entire remote-controlled hovercraft from scratch. Unfortunately, she didn't have enough parts for the controls.

She planned on entering the New Caspian Science Institute, study engineering, and go off to help unaligned planets as part of the Federation Engineers without Borders program, helping systems that had just made first contact to build up their infrastructure, but all that changed when the First General War broke out. She was only 14 at the time, and the Cardassians proved to be just as harsh then as they had been in the Dominion War. The Shanth family was forced to work on a collective farm outside of town under the harsh watch of Cardassian overseers, providing food and supplies to the war effort. Despite the troubles and hardships, Varani kept a warm outlook on life. She tried to keep their spirits up, keep them going through the dark, because she knew that if she didn't, it was going to be all too easy to just give in.

After the war finally ended, Varani's look on the future had changed. She put in an application to Starfleet Academy, for their engineering program. She knew that this was going to be a new galaxy, with new threats, and she wanted to see the Federation through it. Upon graduation, she served a stint at Earth Station McKinley, helping to decommission the old station as the new Starbase was being constructed, and then served at the New Madrid Shipyards as they retooled for and built some of the first destroyers for service. Eventually, she was tapped to come back to the Academy as an instructor, and agreed on the condition that she was able to serve a tour on a starship, no matter how brief. So she toured with the USS Chicago, patrolling the Cardassian border, before transferring back to Earth. Now, she just hopes to see this newest group of cadets get through with the best training and the ability to defend the Federation to the utmost.
