Personal History

Daughter of two employees of Utopia Planitia, Sophia was exposed to starships at a young age. Her father, before his additional training and promotion, was a welder, her mother made sure the frames of the ships would hold. Sophie and her twin sister Laura would pull out the stacks of PaDDs loaded with blueprints from their mother’s office and study them. When they played pretend, they played “starship captain”. They would go outside, point at the stars, and talk about the places they would go.

Laura never went to the stars--her path took her into nursing. Sophia on the other hand knew she wanted to join Star Fleet, but she didn’t know what she wanted to do. She wasn’t patient enough for science, or technical enough for engineering, and she found the idea of sitting at a tactical station mindnumbing. For awhile she considered medical and security, but couldn’t decide which to focus on. She entered the academy initially with a medical specialty.

Her first year, Sophia struggled with a lack of focus. That changed the beginning of her second year, when she took Introduction to Starship Support. Support was everything she wanted: varied tasks, multiple areas of interest, and a chance to see all aspects of a star ship and its crew. She switched her emphasis to support, while picking up EMT and marksmanship certifications on the side.

Upon graduation, Sophia was stationed on a heavy cruiser, the USS Trafalgar. As a midshipman and ensign, she rotated through the various specialties of support. She served as a biological material cleaner and in decontamination, and as an assist for every other department. At her promotion to lieutenant junior grade, she was assigned primarily as a medical assist, in addition to leading the biological clean-up team. Because she kept her marksmanship up, she also acted as an extra guard when needed. In a major incident in her early career, she punctured a lung trying to keep a patient from being taken hostage.

Later, she was promoted to full lieutenant and transferred to the USS Independence, another heavy cruiser in a new fleet. Here she was assigned as Chief Support Officer. Her focus had switch from filling the needs of one department, to filling the needs of all of them. She had to learn where best to allocate personnel and resources, along with the unique needs of each department. On the Independence she met Jay Howard, a security officer. They became fast friends, and later more, his intense focus on security balancing her urge to split her focus among everything. They married shortly after Sophia was promoted to Lieutenant Commander.

The First Officer on the Independence became a mentor for Sophia, and pushed her to take the Command Officer’s Certification test. Here Sophia learned that her eclectic skill set was a benefit, not a downside to being in command. Having both macro and micro perceptions of the workings of the ship allowed her lead with precision and understanding. She became interested in a career in Command, and made careful efforts to remedy any gaps in her education. She worked hard, but the chaos of the war with the Krynar kept her in a support position where she was really needed. She was shocked and horrified by the destruction of the Krynar system, even if she was glad that war was over. When a First Officer position opened on the Avenger, she was recommended to fill it.
