Personal History

Adam Reach was not born on Earth, the traditional homeworld of the Human race. Instead, he was born on the dusty colonial world of Ajilon. The world’s precarious location straddling the Federation and Klingon border left its citizens in the constant fear of war.

Matthew Reach spent his adult life in service to the colonial government, where he eventually became mayor of Tanada Bay. The elder Reach guided the community through the general political upheaval marring the Quadrant, dealing with Federation and Klingon envoys regularly. With his wife, Liara, Matthew had two sons: his oldest, Lucas, followed by Adam.

In the aftermath of the First General War, Liara Reach decided that her residency on Ajilon was at an end. Embittered by Matthew’s unerring loyalty to Ajilon and what she perceived to be his misguided priorities, Liara split from her husband. After a bitter custodial battle Liara emigrated to Sol with Lucas in tow, never to return to Ajilon.

Adam demonstrated compassion for others as a child, supplemented by his earnest quest for knowledge. As a boy he made friends, studied, played, but found the move from Tanada Bay to New Berlin disorienting. Removed from a small colonial world and thrust upon one from which he could see the Federation’s capital at any time, Adam Reach hesitantly acquainted himself with his new society.

Adam maintained contact with his father and brother often enough that the separation felt more like an extended vacation. His father continued in Ajilon’s politics and Lucas was poised to follow in his footsteps. Around that time, when Adam finished with his schooling, he considered and chose Starfleet as his career path.

His decision met with quiet disdain from his mother, Liara, who continued to regard obscure senses of duty with suspicion. Since enlisting his relationship with his mother has considerably stiffened, neither particularly comfortable with the other, with Adam relating to his distant brother and father more than he ever had before.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Medical practices (diagnosis, treatment, surgery)
Academy Minor(s): Medical technology
Hobbies and Pastimes: Adam is a rock-climber; he regularly visits the Academy gym for top-roping with his friends.
Short-Term Goals: The successful restoration of his ties with his mother are a motivating force behind Adam’s actions. In his mind, if he can prove himself to Starfleet then it should be good enough to prove his choice to be the right one to his mother, Liara.
Long-Term Goals: Since his departure from Ajilon, Adam has not returned. Partly because of his mother’s overbearing dictatorship and his own fear of returning to the dusty world he left behind, Adam ultimately hopes to bridge the expanse separating his broken family.
Personality: Noticeably quiet tendencies mark the personality of Adam Reach, reserving himself unless he has something of use to contribute. Adam connects with people easily, though, a skill he picked up after moving to New Berlin.
Sense of Humor: Laughing is Adam’s favorite pastime, and if he can gather friends and comrades around him in the process then Adam will regard Starfleet all the better for it.
Phobias: None.
Likes: Laughing is Adam’s favorite pastime, and if he can gather friends and comrades around him in the process then Adam will regard Starfleet all the better for it.
Dislikes: Despite being on genuinely good terms with Matthew, Adam harbors a great amount of resentment towards his father. His mother enflamed those feelings, blaming Matthew’s unwillingness to depart Ajilon as the primary reason their family disintegrated.
Achievements: Adam performs well in school.
Disappointments: Largely disappointed in his parents, Adam is trying to find his way in life.
Illnesses: None.
Strengths: Loyal to a fault, Adam often proves himself in the eyes of friends and family.
Weaknesses: Adam tends to be too introverted. Slow to make friends, his trust is difficult to earn.
Fears: Adam fears the loss of stability in his adult life; he enjoys routine and security.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: An affinity for warm clothing, pants and long sleeves, regardless of the weather.
Distinguishing Features: None.
Pets: None
Friends: Kaleb Ventus, a young entrepreneur who runs a shuttle taxi service in New Berlin. After abandoning Ajilon with his mother, Kaleb was one of the first people Adam met in his school on New Berlin. Developing a close bond, the boys went their separate ways at the end of high school. Kaleb hoped to become an accomplished businessman, and Adam aspired to be a doctor that healed Star Fleet’s injured.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: The schism that ripped his family apart, though distant, made any sense of familial normalcy vanish from Adam Reach’s memory. His memories of a unified family feel like a dream, something from a lifetime ago.
Best Time: Growing up in New Berlin, away from the dangers and fears of his homeworld, proved to be instrumental for Adam. It restored his confidence in himself and resulted in a lasting friendship with Kaleb Ventus.
Most Crucial Experience: The awkward silence between Adam and his mother, Liara, has been a lesson that has shown Adam that he can’t please everyone. It has imparted an understanding that Adam must make himself happy before he can try to make others happy.
Role Model: Lucas, Adam’s older brother, proved to be his hero several times over as young children. Lucas often swept to Adam’s rescue as a child, whether it was protecting the younger from bullies or walking to and from school with him.
