Personal History

Sullivan Rawne was born in a nowhere town in the middle of England, a part of Earth that seems to pride itself on its ties to the past rather than willingness to engage with the future. Throughout his childhood, Rawne never felt truly at home in Kettering and yearned to get out into the universe.

The Starfleet Marines proved to be his way out. Sullivan, or Van as he prefers, always had a fiercely competitive streak. He played contact sports for the physical challenges of taking on an opposite number. A mind naturally inclined towards strategy and tactics was honed by years of wargames and exercises, and it was at one of these exercises that he fell in with a Marine recruiting sergeant. Rawne graded out as officer potential, and in a turn of events that shocked even him he aced the Starfleet Academy entrance exam and entered Marine Officer training.

On graduation, Van shunned the more coveted assignments on board ship to take a posting with a frontier company on the eastern fringes of Federation space. The Nomads, as the company called themselves, were frequently assigned to resolve skirmishes on newly founded colony worlds and protect shipping from roving rogue elements. 2nd and then 1st Lieutenant Rawne cut his teeth in the nasty little conflicts that no-one else wanted to fight, learning the lessons and nuances of combat one step at a time.

Rawne’s promotion to Captain coincided with the outbreak of the Romulan war, and he took a posting right in the heart of the combat zone. Van served with distinction at a number of flashpoints throughout the conflict, but it was a later incident that was to really mark his arrival on the scene.

The 14th Regiment were in transit between the staging point at Yalta and the front lines after R&R and resupply when the troop ships were attacked by a Romulan force. The first ship to be destroyed contained the regimental HQ officers, and four more ships were lost before Rawne took matters into his own hands.

He took the brevet rank of Major for himself and then organised a counter-attack. With the convoy’s meagre protection gone, the overconfident Romulans had neglected their defences and were taken completely by surprise when Marines appeared throughout their ships, beamed there by jury-rigged transporters from the runabouts on the troop carriers. The melee was short, bloody and especially vicious, but by the end of it the Starfleet Marines returned to their ships leaving drifting green-hulled wrecks in their wake.

Greatly reduced in numbers, the remnants of the 14th were reformed into a veteran company under the command of Major Rawne, his promotion confirmed by Starfleet Command in recognition of the unit’s accomplishments. They took the name Rawne’s Raiders and gave Romulan hunter-killer patrols an awful lot to think about, operating from q-ships and preying on vessels homing in on what had seemed like an easy target.

When the war came to an end the hard-bitten Raiders were kept together and assigned to the fleet’s newest battleship, the USS Nova under Admiral Grant. Bulked back out with new recruits to mould in their image, the Raiders look on paper to be a good match with Grant and his crew, given the reputation of both units for somehow always ending up in the thick of the action…

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Tactics, naval strategy and weapon discipline
Academy Minor(s): Field engineering, languages and support vessel control
Hobbies and Pastimes: Contact sports (starred at linebacker for the Academy football squad), military history
Short-Term Goals: Adapting to ship-board life from the rigours of years of daily combat
Long-Term Goals: Rising as far up the ranks as he can
Personality: When not in combat, Rawne can almost be described as laid back – his unit know that he is not overly bothered by every little detail as long as what has to be done, is done. When the chips are down, though, the Major is a very different animal. Powerful and authoritative, he leads from the front and demands nothing short of everything his troops have to give
Sense of Humor: Very waspish wit, with a knack for sharp one-liners
Likes: The adrenaline-fuelled rush of competition, whether that be on a holodeck going up against a friend or comrade, or on the battlefield going toe-to-toe with the enemy
Dislikes: Long periods of inactivity
Pet Peeves or Gripes: Marine stereotypes
Bad Habits or Vices: Never far away from a loaded weapon. He doesn’t see this as a problem, but others do
Achievements: Surviving the Romulan attack on his troop convoy and bringing back a sizeable chunk of the regiment from the brink
Disappointments: So used to being in combat that he knows he’ll never be able to settle and enjoy a ‘normal’ life
Illnesses: Nothing out of the ordinary
Strengths: Analytical mind, excellent improvisational skills, outstanding leader of men
Weaknesses: Can take things too personally, a little too blunt when he thinks someone is wrong
Fears: Causing the needless death of anyone under his command
Prejudices: Utterly dismissive of the claims of any Security officer who believes they’re any kind of combat veteran
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Rawne is virtually always in some form of uniform. When forced to don ‘civvies’, he will revert to all black casual clothes
Distinguishing Features: His raw presence and force of personality make him a hard man to ignore
Pets: None
Friends: Marine Captain Saural th’Tran. Rawne and the taciturn Andorian fought back-to-back for many weeks during the Romulan war and are now the firmest of friends

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Van is at his most vulnerable after combat, when he reflects on the friends lost. It still stings even now to see fallen comrades, but it was much worse before he learned to stop trying to take personal responsibility for every single person in the combat zone
Best Time: Leaving Kettering behind him and joining the Marines. Van has seen more of the universe than anyone in his family and intends to see a lot more of it before he’s through
Most Crucial Experience: A chance encounter with the Marine recruiting sergeant during a cadet exercise in his late teens. Without that, he may never have realised his potential and lived his life in the same small town
Role Model: Van doesn’t believe in role models and has never had one himself. He works to make the most of himself and the opportunities he is given
