An osmotic eel is an aquatic lifeform.
It resembles the Earth the starfish, and has four legs.
In the 2100s, this animal was used for the medical purpose of cleaning and healing wounds. The animal can cauterize wounds, and can be useful in removing certain types of parasites.
- Most notably used by Doctor Phlox of the Enterprise.
Nourishment for this animal is relatively modest, requiring a nutrient broth every three to four days.
While "working," the broth requirement is less, as it gains its nutrients from ingesting blood from the patient.
Similar to the old-Earth practice of using leeches for medical purposes, the use of Osmotic Eels do not fall under Federation-grade regulation.
