1965 - NASA spacecraft Ranger 9 brings real-time images of the Moon into civilian homes before crash landing.
1993 - Comet "Shoemaker–Levy 9" is discovered at the Palomar Observatory in California. It later broke apart and collided with Jupiter, providing the first direct observation of an extraterrestrial collision of Solar System objects.
