Also known as Kzin, the Kzinti are a race of sentient feline carnivores native to the planet Kzin.

Physiology

The Kzinti are large, carnivorous, cat-like beings that stand over two meters tall. Their anatomy is extremely well reinforced, as they possess multiple hearts, and vertical bracings along their ribs.

Kzinti are highly sexually dimorphic, at least in terms of intelligence; only the males are sentient, a trait that Kzinti sometimes forget that other species (such as humans) do not share. Some male Kzinti were capable of reading minds. However, psychologically, these males are often unhappy and neurotic. Although there are no sure ways to prevent a Kzinti telepath from reading someone’s mind, it is found that mental imagery of eating vegetation dissuads them from making such attempts.

Society and Culture

The Kzinti are a prejudiced, war-like species who often speak of pride and honor. Males have no respect for males of herbivorous species, such as Vulcans, or for females of any species. This lack of respect stemmed from the fact that on their homeworld, Kzinti females are simply "dumb animals".

If a Kzinti is defeated in battle, but allowed to live, that action is considered the ultimate insult. In such a case, the Kzinti has to seek revenge by challenging the attacker to a duel to before the attacked Kzinti is allowed to seek either medical assistance or reinforcements.

"The Highest of Kzin" is the title bestowed upon the supreme leader of the Kzinti.

The Kzinti are enthusiastic carnivores, and disdain other sentient species, such as Vulcans, that use only plants for sustenance.

History

Since making first contact with Earth humans shortly after Zefram Cochrane's historic first warp flight in 2063, the Kzinti have initiated no fewer than four wars against Earth. They were defeated on each occasion. The last such conflict was concluded in the twenty-first century, and the subsequent Human-Kzinti peace was established by the Treaty of Sirius, which remained in force for centuries thereafter, despite occasional incursions by renegade Kzinti, such as the Kzinti attack on the Shuttlecraft Copernicus in 2269.

Recent History

The Kzinti have long been known to almost-fanatically experiment with their own genome; it is suspected that genetic manipulation may have contributed to the degeneration of the Kzinti female and their lack of sentience. In 2418, researchers at Star Fleet Medical, investigating a declining birth rate, discovered that the Kzinti genome is now dangerously unstable, and that the race may become extinct within the century. The reproductive crisis spawned a militancy among the Kzinti people, who intended to conquer their offshoot species, the Mirak. The war was short but bloody, and by January 2419, the Kzinti homeworld was a charred and barren rock and the species itself consisted of little more than individual survivors; mostly outcast prior to the species' downfall.
