Personal History

Born on June 6, in Bicknell, Utah; Nikko is the first child of Sarah and Randy Kortoli. Their second child, Samantha, was born on June 3, 2 years later. From the start, Nikko seemed to have an affinity for mechanics and electronics, though he didn't really want to explore this area of his skills. Until he was 16, he really wanted to be a pilot.

Samantha always followed Nikko around. Nikko was of two minds about this. He loved his sister, but she really got in the way sometimes. Nikko's parents were stern, but very loving.

Growing up in a small town, Nikko didn't have too many friends. His best friend was Charlie, at least until he was 8, when Charlie and his family moved away.

After his sister's tragic accident on Nikko's 8th birthday, Nikko withdrew into himself. For the most of his pre- and early teens, Nikko did not have any friends of note, though he did socialize a little at school, and had a girlfriend or two. He has not spoken to anyone he knew in school since graduation.

Nikko was ecstatic about being accepted into the Academy. Now he can get the best training in engineering, and get the chance to examine alien technology

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Advanced Warp Drive Design, Starship Life Support Systems
Academy Minor(s): Small Craft Piloting, Astronavigations
Hobbies and Pastimes: Building replica models of various space, land, and air craft. Terran History
Short-Term Goals: Visit an alien planet, preferably when not on duty so he can explore
Long-Term Goals: Develop a warp drive capable of greater than warp 10. Discovering and learning about alien technology, specifically as it applies to space travel
Personality: Nikko is calm of temperament most of the time, and even when he gets upset he tries to keep a clear head and see matters from any involved party's perspective. An observant person will note that sometimes he fidgets once in a while, but this only means he is either a little nervous or bored. Nikko is very friendly, and has a confidence in himself, without seeming cocky
Sense of Humor: Nikko loves a good laugh, and will joke with anyone he feels relaxed with. His humor is never at the expense of another sentient, unless a good friend presents the opportunity for a little good-natured hazing
Phobias: Earthquakes. Nikko was visiting family in California on Earth when a minor earthquake hit. Watching the buildings sway was a bit unnerving
Likes: Nikko loves to sample food he has never tried before, and will try any non-toxic food at least once
Dislikes: Nikko hates it when someone tries to finish his sentences for him, and also hates it when someone assumes he did something for a specific reason without asking him why. In both cases, most people guess wrong
Pet Peeves or Gripes: Nikko loves to be organized, and hates it when he sees a clutter
Achievements: Honor student in grade school and high school. Has a small atmospheric craft pilot's certification
Disappointments: Nothing major yet. A minor one was not placing at all his senior year science fair in high school
Illnesses: Had chicken pox as a child, and a minor heart murmur that was corrected
Strengths: Nikko knows what he wants most of the time, so his decisions are usually fairly quick. He has great mechanical aptitude
Weaknesses: Nikko has a hard time saying no to people. He has been told that he is easy to take advantage of
Fears: Having something he fixed break down again and resulting in a sentient being hurt
Prejudices: None that he knows of. His parents were fairly open-minded
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Prefers loosely fit clothing allowing ease of movement, without being considered baggy
Distinguishing Features: Sharp angular face, large eyes. A small oval scar on his left hand index finger
Pets: Holly - black longhair domestic cat
Friends: Charlie was Nikko's best childhood friend, but they fell out of touch when Charlie and his family moved away when they both were 8. Nikko has had a few friends since, but none he would really call a 'best' friend

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: On Nikko's 8th birthday, he had received a new model remote shuttlecraft. Nikko was anxious to try it out, so he ran off for his favorite place in the woods, a small clearing he liked to call 'The Nikko Quadrant'.

On his way there, he heard his 6 year old sister, Samantha, call out his name. Nikko wanted to be alone to try his shuttle craft, so he ignored her, knowing she would not try to cross the tree that was the bridge over Cecil Creek. Just as Nikko was about to turn on the shuttlecraft, he heard his sister cry out. It sounded like she had gotten hurt. Nikko rushed back the way he came to check on her.

Nikko found Sam at the side of Cecil creek, about a 2 meter drop from the tree, which she was attempting to cross. Nikko half slid, half fell down the side of the creek bed, rushing to Sam. Sam had her eyes open, but there was a lot of blood around her head. Close to panic, Nikko tried to think of what to do. All of his first aid lessons had abandoned his memory. Finally, he thought to go get some help. He told Sam to hold on, he would be right back, and took off for home.

Nikko was able to get Sarah, his mother, back to Sam in time. Sam survived the fall, but not without long lasting effects. For the rest of her life, Sam thought and spoke like a 6 year old.

Nikko still has nightmares about that day. If only he had gone back to get Sam before she tried to cross the bridge, maybe they both would be in the Academy now.
Best Time: Nikko and his father spent many days building working models of various craft. Nikko got annoyed whenever his father tried to turn him towards engineering, but he loved his father, so he dealt with it, plus he loved the end result…a machine he built that worked! Nikko still has most of the craft his father and he had built. The ones that didn't crash, anyway
Most Crucial Experience: Emotionally, Nikko's experience on his 8th birthday determined the basis for his personality and mindset. But the defining factor for his career decision was his trip to Colorado.

Nikko was in a small shuttle, heading to Colorado to do some skiing, when something in the shuttle malfunctioned, causing the shuttle to swerve drastically. The co-pilot bumped his head and was knocked unconscious, and the pilot was very busy trying to keep the shuttle on a straight course, so they didn't plow into a mountainside.

Knowing something had to be done, Nikko quickly got out the tool kit that comes standard on any shuttlecraft. Identifying the source of the problem by the acrid smell and smoke coming from a panel, Nikko took off the panel and looked at the circuit boards. The problem was easy to see, a circuit in the port stabilizers had fried. Nikko used the tools to bridge the damaged circuit, and the pilot was able to regain control.

Nikko had his 15 minutes of fame for fixing the shuttlecraft. After the incident, Nikko realized it would be a waste of his talents to be anything but an engineer
Role Model: Ever since Nikko decided that engineering was his true calling, he has looked for stories about great engineers, trying to learn what they were like, how they thought. Foremost, as with many engineers, was Zephrin Cochran, the father of warp drive. (on earth, anyway). The engineering brilliance and know how needed to make a warp drive was phenomenal, considering what Zephrin had to work with. But most of all, it was Zephrin's courage to test his warp drive personally that puts him at the top of Nikko's list. Also, just coming into adulthood when Nikko decided on his calling, he has a saying of Zephrin's memorized.

"Don't try to be a Great Man. Just be a Man, and let history make it's own judgments."

Although Zephrin is Nikko's main role model, he doesn't displace Nikko's father. Randy is just in a different category
