Personal History

Larae was born on Trill, but grew up on Caldik Prime, a nearby star system. Her father moved the family there because he thought the competition for Trill symbionts was ridiculous. Larae grew up with knowledge of the symbionts but never had any wish to be joined throughout her life.

Caldik Prime was a very mixed colony with a heavy Federation presence. Larae was always fascinated with the different species and was known to ask too many questions about each race. She often got in trouble with her teachers for speaking out of turn and off topic. When she reached high school age, she was sent to a school that specialized in the sciences.

Her high school encouraged her curiosity and helped her to discover that she wanted to be a doctor. Getting her doctorate at Star Fleet Academy was a natural step for her.

She entered the Academy right out of high school and jumped into the medical program. She excelled in her studies, mostly because of her insatiable curiosity that kept her at her work. Needless to say, she didn’t have much of a social life in the Academy.

After she graduated, she was sent out on a Science ship, the USS Max Planck, as a doctor. She was promoted to Assistant Chief Medical Officer during her second year on the Max Planck after an encounter with the Chrysalians. Their population had a genetic mutation that caused the females to greatly outnumber the males. It was getting so bad that they were facing the possibility of extinction as a race, though it would be a few hundred years. Because of Larae’s Genetics speciality, she headed up the team that worked with the Chrysalians to study their DNA. Her efforts allowed them to find the source of the mutation, and cure the Chrysalians of their genetic disease. She was only a Lieutenant Junior Grade when she was promoted.

A couple years later she was still serving on the Max Planck and the Chief Medical Officer was near retirement. Then Lieutenant Larae was preparing to take his position when the Dominion War started. Her dual specialities of Genetics and Xenobiology, plus her work through the years, made her vital to the research of Dominion and Gamma Quadrant species. She was promoted to Lieutenant Commander and reassigned to Deep Space Nine, where she worked with Dr. Bashir and others on mapping the physiologies and psychologies of Dominion species. Though she was technically under the command of Dr. Bashir, he let her have free reign in her research.

During her time on Deep Space Nine she met Dr. Arlen Meneus, a Terran civilian physician who was on a sabbatical. They quickly became friends and eventually got married. He stayed with her on the station for the remainder of his sabbatical, but had to return to Earth. Larae’s work was too important for her to give up her position and they agree to be separated for a while. Shortly after he left, Larae realized she was pregnant. This was near the end of the War. After the Dominion War, she was promoted to Commander and given command of a small science/medical ship, the USS Boris Yegorov, to take out to the Gamma Quadrant and further study the various “new” species. Her son, Jere Meneus, was born on board the ship. They spent many years travelling the Quadrant, working with the physicians and scientists of other species to broaden medical horizons. She was promoted to Captain during this time.

Larae and her husband had become very estranged during this time, though he kept up regular correspondence with their son. They didn’t get an official divorce for quite a few years but eventually mutually agreed that it was for the best. Their individual work was too important to them for them to keep up a regular relationship.

Star Fleet Medical eventually noticed her work, and offered her a position. At first she was reluctant to take the position, but gave in when her son begged her to move them to Earth so he could get to know his dad. They moved to Boston, where the Surgeon General’s office was located, and Arlen gave up his position as a doctor to become a professor at Harvard University. He did this to be near his son.

Larae’s work and diligence at Star Fleet Medical was again quickly notice and she was soon promoted to Commodore and given the position of Head of Xenobiology. She kept this position for many years, eventually getting promoted to Rear Admiral. The desk job and paperwork wasn’t what she was used to, but she soon became accustomed to the position. Recently, the Surgeon General of Star Fleet Medical retired. Larae was very surprised to find herself as one of the rumored primary candidates for the position. When it was offered to her, she almost went into shock, but accepted the position. She was promoted to Vice Admiral
