Personal History

Born in San Francisco, Joel's childhood was a bit on the conflicted side, due the radically different natures of his parents' professions. Though neither made any attempt to impede on their son's free will or impose their own individual fields of work, Joel still felt nearly obligated to try and follow both dance and mechanical engineering with equal passions. Though that didn't leave much room for a social life in his first fourteen years, he didn't much seem to mind, taking things apart in the first half of each day, and prancing around a stage in the second half.

When he was fifteen, a high enough age for his independence to become a bit more secure, Joel's interests tilted slightly away from the field of dance and more towards that of engineering, branching off from his father's focus on warp theory and taking in the many different aspects of engineering. By this time, he could proudly say that not only was he capable of taking things apart, but he was also reasonably successful with putting them back together.

As he entered the higher grades of public school, he still took dance as an optional course, but a majority of his classes were in mathematics, engineering, even shop class. His growing love of machines soon pressed him to trying to find the best, quickest way to find cutting-edge technology to drool over; naturally, this desire led him straight to Star Fleet.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Engineering
Academy Minor(s): Computer Programming, Xenotechnology.
Hobbies and Pastimes: Dance and stage acting still interest him considerably, but in the end he would take sitting at a workbench taking apart a piece of alien technology over anything else.
Short-Term Goals: Perform his duties to the best of his ability, and hopefully earn more responsibility.
Long-Term Goals: Research doesn't interest him that much, aside from his own idle experiments with bits of equipment. He's mostly interested in a modified Star Fleet motto; seek out new engines, and new power converters! To boldly tinker where no man has tinkered before! In other words, he doesn't much care if it's a station or a starship, as long as he gets shiny new machines to worship.
Personality: Despite his lack of friends in early childhood, he managed to flower quite nicely, becoming open, friendly, and quick to a quip. He thrives on his work, perfectly happy with replacing every single neural gel pack on any given ship at the drop of a hat.
Sense of Humor: His sharp, somewhat dry wit would make one laugh often with him. He also has a bit of a knack in making a quip in the sort of deadpanned tone that would make one wonder if he was joking or not.
Phobias: A minor phobia of this doll from a 20th century film called Child’s Play; he saw a holovid when he was young, and still can’t get past that fear.
Likes: 20th century musical videos, (Court Jester, Singing in the Rain, etc) dancing, tinkering. (the last one is more of a love, really...)
Dislikes: Inactivity, Tribbles.
Pet Peeves or Gripes: He hates arrogance above all other things, especially unfounded arrogance.
Bad Habits or Vices: He has a nasty habit of chewing his fingernails that can seize him when he’s nervous, and a perpetual inability to think of anything but work.
Achievements: He graduated from the Academy! Huzzah! He also managed to increase power consumption efficiency for his dorm room’s replicator, but the staff returned it to regular specs when Joel graduated. He’s probably done the same thing to the replicator in his quarters by now.
Disappointments: That they returned his replicator to specs, damnit! It was a good design! Other than that, he’s as happy as a clam.
Illnesses: None
Strengths: He has an excellent memory, allowing him to recall complex schematics with little or no visual assistance; but he is also capable of improvising and adapting to a situation. In other words, he’s not just an automaton who endlessly recites what he’s learned; he can combine, or modify his knowledge to create new solutions.
Weaknesses: At the moment, he’s inexperienced, which means he has trouble expressing any of the ideas he has. Also, he has trouble knowing when to take a break, so he could quite easily drive himself into exhaustion. Also, although he doesn’t quite disobey orders, he can still toe the line of authority when he really feels he has to, which can get irritating
Fears: A condition that would effect his ability to think clearly, or his memory; for someone who relies so much on those abilities.
Prejudices: A distrust of all Ferengi… then again, this is less a prejudice, and more a matter of common sense…
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Generally light brown tunics and black trousers.
Distinguishing Features: None
Pets: None

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Well, fortunately his life is fairly sheltered; the most painful experience was a little altercation in the middle of high school that left him with a broken nose and a few snapped ribs. In his defence, you should look at the condition of the other guy. Emotionally, he’s never really suffered anything worse than an unfulfilled crush.
Best Time: When he finally managed to figure out the curvature factors in a warp field without the use of a reference table. It’d have been the best time of your life, too, if it took you three days of straight studying and five massive headaches to finally work through the problem.
Most Crucial Experience: Probably a trip to his father’s place of work at the age of fifteen; it’s what led to his focus on Engineering, and eventually to his enrolment in Star Fleet
Role Model: Montgomery Scott, Chief Engineer of the USS Enterprise, original model. This man is considered, to Joel, to be the greatest tinkerer in the world. His use of the transporter on a diagnostic cycle to place himself in suspension for over half a century is still something that leaves the young man bright-eyed and bushy-tailed over.
