1909 – Ernest Shackleton's expedition finds the magnetic South Pole.

2006 – The "Stardust" capsule successfully returns to Earth, carrying dust from a comet, which sheds light on the origins of our planetary system. It was the first successful collection of cometary and interstellar material.
