Gibraltar Class Marine Assault Ship
The Gibraltar-class Marine Assault Ship was a Marine assault ship designed to enable marine deployment.
History
In light of probable hostilities with Federation adversaries, there was a justifiable need for a new class of ship designed to enable significant marine deployment via an independent and self-supporting platform. Planners in the R&D sections of both the Star Fleet Marine Corps and Star Fleet Corps of Engineers devised a plan to develop a class of ship to meet these needs, while at the same time keep the required resources involved to a complete minimum. The plan involved the use of an Excelsior Class hull as a prototype.
The significant number of Excelsior class ships still operational with Star Fleet, was a testament to their multiple-mission capability and their advanced offensive/defensive design. Though these ships were slowly being phased out of service to provide manpower for newer ship designs and hulls being brought into service, the majority of these ships were being put into mothballed service rather than being scrapped.
The large size of the ship was able to comfortably accommodate the extra marine personnel, and the drop-ship complement could accommodated in a purpose-built hanger module, positioned underneath the rear of the main superstructure. Additional shield modulator type 17X was fitted to provide additional shielding protection in the area. There was no degradation in the offensive ranking, and a marginal increase in the defensive ranking of this ship.
Overall, the creative designs from both R&D departments were successful, and after the 8 month cycle to develop the first ship the MAS-100 Gibraltar was commissioned. Since then others of the MAS type have been drawn together and put into action around the fleet, supplying the forceful and efficient power of the SFMC wherever the need presents itself.
After the Krynar Crisis was concluded, and with the galaxy at peace, the surviving Gibraltar-class ships were decommissioned and scheduled for disposal in mid 2417, over 130 years after the original Excelsior first entered service.
