1901 – The first Nobel Prize ceremony is held in Stockholm, on the fifth anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death.
- Physics: Wilhelm Röntgen for his discovery of x-rays
- Medicine: Emil von Behring for his work on serum therapy
- Chemistry: Jacobus H. van't Hoff for his work on rates of reaction, equilibrium and osmotic pressure
1984 – The National Science Foundation reported the discovery of the first planet outside the solar system, orbiting a star 21 million light years from Earth.
