• Dr. Beverly Crusher leaves the USS Enterprise-D to become head of Star Fleet Medical.

• She is replaced by Dr. Katherine Pulaski.

• Geordi La Forge is promoted to full Lieutenant and made the USS Enterprise-D's Chief Engineer.

• Worf is permanently made USS Enterprise-D's Chief of Security.

• Commander William T. Riker becomes the first Star Fleet officer to serve on a Klingon vessel due to the Officer Exchange Program.

• Captain Jean-Luc Picard helps to define the rights of artificial life.

• Commander Maddox wished to disassemble Data, in order to construct more androids like him.
• Data is granted the full rights appropriate to all sentient lifeforms.

• The United Federation of Planets makes first contact with the Borg, due to the Q being hurling the Enterprise-D 7,000 light years into Borg space.
